The 1,200 National Guard who are headed to the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona won't be on the front lines but will be helping out in vital support roles, President Obama said Thursday.
Speaking at an East Room press conference in the White House, the president said the Guard will primarily assist with intelligence, but troops will not not nabbing illegal immigrants and smugglers as they cross into the southwestern state.
"What we find is, is that National Guards persons can help on intelligence, dealing with both drug and human trafficking along the borders. They can relieve border guards so that the border guards then can be in charge of law enforcement in those areas. So there are a lot of functions that they can carry out that helps leverage and increase the resources available in this area," he said.
"They can relieve border guards so that guards can be in charge of law enforcement," the president added.
Obama said his plan to send as many as 1,200 troops was shaped last year before a national controversy erupted over Arizona's tough new law cracking down on illegal immigrants. The law allows state police to determine whether an individual is in the state legally when he or she is questioned by police on other suspicions.

If we don’t put ~200,000 troops on the border to assist the 20,000 BP, there will be no change.
I posted just the other day that this would play out the same way as when W sent in the NG.
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again:
These troops are just the beginning of the forces Obama will use to overthrow the will of the people of the state of Arizona.
When his Justice Department overrules SB 1070, and when Gov. Brewer and other elected officials take action, Obama will already have his brown-shirts in place and declare Martial Law.
Trust me folks, Arizona is the new Fort Sumter.

I got this in an email, and I did verify that it is correct.
It seems California is not obeying their own laws. Here is California Penal Code section 843b.
834b. (a) Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws.
(b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following:
(1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and
place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.
(2) Notify the person of his or her apparent status as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws and inform him or her that, apart from any criminal justice proceedings, he or she must either obtain legal status or leave the United States.
(3) Notify the Attorney General of California and the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service of the apparent illegal status and provide any additional information that may be requested by any other public entity.
(c) Any legislative, administrative, or other action by a city,county, or other legally authorized local governmental entity with jurisdictional boundaries, or by a law enforcement agency, to prevent or limit the cooperation required by subdivision (a) is expressly prohibited.

Obama’s offer of “aid” for AZ border security is more symbolic than useful. Shocking.
So basically he refuses to do anything about the illegal penetration into the country, but he will send in his minion spies intermixed w/ regular soldiers to snoop around looking for dirt to malign the Arizona law.
Gladly.
Two suggestions for AZ. One, post signs reading ‘FREE BUS TICKETS TO CALIF’ second, put up signs saying WELCOME, signed Obama...

NObama is an affirmative action person who will never fill the shoes that it takes to be President. He is illegally in that office, also. He is probably scared someone will stop him somewhere & ask for his citizenship papers.
Too bad the DNC didn’t do that earlier—in say—2006.
Maybe NObama & Michelle are planning on retiring in Aculpulco??

WASHINGTON, May 27, 2010 – An agreement to send hundreds of additional National Guardsmen to the southwestern U.S. border is one part of a comprehensive approach needed for immigration reform, President Barack Obama said today.
Obama spoke briefly to reporters about his decision announced earlier this week to authorize as many as 1,200 Guard members to the border during a White House news conference that had focused on the oil spill off the Louisiana coast.
Asked by a reporter about the Guard-deployment plan in light of a new Arizona law to crack down on illegal immigration, Obama said the plan was shaped last year.
“So this is not simply in response to the Arizona law, the president said. The plan became public earlier this week after Obama met with Arizona Sen. John McCain, who has requested more federal resources along the border.
Obama called immigration “inherently the job of the federal government,” and said sending Guardsmen would be a basic step in securing the border before other reforms are implemented through legislation.
“I don’t see these issues solely in isolation,” Obama said of the layers of concerns along the border. “We’re not going to solve the problem solely by sending National Guard troops down there. We’re going to do it by creating a fair and humane immigration framework.”
National Guard troops can help with intelligence work, drug and human trafficking interdiction, and relieving border guards on security tasks so they can do more law enforcement, the president said. “So there are a lot of functions that they can carry out that helps leverage and increase the resources available in this area,” he said.
In 2006, about 6,000 National Guard members participated in Operation Jump Start in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. In accordance with federal law, Guardsmen do not serve in direct law enforcement roles, but provide reinforcement to the U.S. Border Patrol. Their missions included engineering, aviation, entry identification teams and a wide range of technical, logistical and administrative support.
National Security Advisor James L. Jones and Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism and Presidential Assistant John O. Brennan sent a May 25 letter to Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, explaining the administration’s decision not to send a specific number of Guardsmen, as one Senate amendment calls for. More than 300 National Guardsmen already are working in counternarcotics duty along the border, they wrote, and more than $1 billion has been secured to deal with drugs and violence along the border.
In authorizing as many as 1,200 Guardsmen to address “evolving border-related challenges,” the administration is avoiding deploying an arbitrary number of personnel, the letter says.
“The president is committed to a strategic approach, consisting of a requirements-based, temporary utilization of up to 1,200 additional National Guard troops to bridge to longer-term enhancements in border protection and [federal] law enforcement personnel,” the letter says.
