Why would they want to become the 51st state ?

They received 100’s of millions of dollars from us. The were the biggest benefactor in the stimulus package.

Also, don’t they(the residents)get a deal on income taxes ?
Someone please clarify.

Most Puerto Ricans are still below the poverty level so any deals on income taxes don’t really mean a lot.

Residents of Puerto Rico do not pay federal income taxes. Even if they became a state, they likely still would not pay federal income taxes, because the people there are relatively poor compared to the rest of the U.S. Currently, only 47% currently pay federal income taxes. Apparently, becoming a state would allow even more money to flow into P.R.
