President Obama will announce on Thursday a suspension of all applications for offshore oil drilling in the Arctic through the remainder of the year, an Alaska senator said late Wednesday.
The decision essentially extends an informal moratorium that Mr. Obama had set shortly after the BP accident on April 20 that led to the spewing of millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The new restrictions would suspend new offshore drilling permits in the Gulf of Mexico and off the North Slope Alaska until the cause of the accident is determined and stricter safety and environmental safeguards are imposed.
One major oil company, Shell Oil, had been hoping to begin a controversial exploratory drilling project this summer in the Arctic Ocean, which the new restrictions would put on hold.
Senator Mark Begich, Democrat of Alaska and a staunch supporter of drilling in the Arctic, said he was informed of the new restrictions by the Interior Department. Sen. Begich said he was frustrated because the decision will cause more delays and higher costs for domestic oil and gas production to meet the nations energy needs.
The Gulf of Mexico tragedy has highlighted the need for much stronger oversight and accountability of oil companies working offshore, but Shell has updated its plans at the administrations request and made significant investments to address the concerns raised by the Gulf spill, Senator Begich said in a statement. They make an effective case that we can safely explore for oil and gas this summer in the Arctic.(continued)

That won’t reduce the environmental risk, since other countries will drill, unless other countries are harder to bribe than the Obama Regime. The only reason to do this is to pander to libs who don’t think deeply about their tactics (which is most libs) and to shift profits from the USA to Obama’s foreign friends.
reactionary....would anybody expect anything more from the TOTUS?
what. an. idiot.
Voters frustration with high energy costs aren’t a good thing in an election year, dear leader.
Yet another data point in the “deliberately trying to destroy the United States” connect the dots puzzle...
Yeah. That will fix what is going wrong in the Gulf.
Every other country that drills in the Gulf is just continuing on drilling happily, with fewer restrictions and safety regulations, laughing at us as we commit energy and economic hari-kari.
He must be removed from office. We won’t make it to 2013 if he serves out his term.
I wonder what The King would do if one of those foreign (e.g. China) drillers had the same sort of accident (if it was an accident) that befell BP, and their oil was washing up on our shores?
Would he play golf, throw a party for the Hollywood glitterati, or go on vacation?
Not that I'm a huge fan of the modern day Republican Party (I count myself a Conservative first and foremost) but I just can't wait until this November to vote STRAIGHT REPUBLICAN to neuter this stupid bastard that occupies OUR White House.
It’s a curious domino effect for November’s election. Gas prices will start to go up...maybe 50 cents higher by November this year and another 50 cents by November of next year. But if he were smart, and suddenly open up both again by fall of next year...prices would recover and everyone would “be happy” by November of 2012 for regular gas prices. Manipulation.
Ignorant MF.
Another study done by X-Acorn organizors.
Good thing he wasn’t around when the 1st steam engine blew up.
He’s the only thing standing between the oil companies and the pitchforks.
Yes - MAO-bama forcing greater submission of America to his saudi/mooslim superiors.
400 YEAR supply of oil in Alaska.
200 YEAR supply of natural gas in Alaska.

Sounds like he’s figured out a way to “not waste a good crisis” in the Gulf. It’s become an excuse to punish Alaska for Sarah Palin.
