Frustration over sand barriers boils in Louisiana as federal government offers few answers

gulf_oil_bobby_jindal.JPGPatrick Semansky/The Associated PressGov. Bobby Jindal, center, speaks at a news conference in Galliano. With Jindal on Monday, from left, are Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Sen. Mary Landrieu, Sen. David Vitter and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

Frustration is mounting among Gov. Bobby Jindal and other state and local leaders as the federal government on Monday could not give a clear direction on whether the state can move ahead with a plan to erect more than 80 miles of sand barriers to keep oil from the Gulf of Mexico out of the state's wetlands.

Jindal and Sen. David Vitter, R-La., pushed the plan again in a news conference this morning in Galliano with congressional leaders, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

"Every day that it's not approved is another day the choice is made for us" to allow oil to seep into coastal marshes, Jindal said.

In a news conference in Washington this afternoon, Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said "we're looking at it in parallel" with the Army Corps of Engineers. The corps received the first permit request from the state on May 11 and a revised one May 14, but the corps has not released any updates or comments from federal and state agencies about the barrier island plan.

Allen, the national incident commander overseeing the oil spill response, offered few new details Monday about the federal government's thoughts on the sand barriers. He did point out several logistical challenges.

Why doesn’t Jindal just take a vacation and things will improve? /sarc

Just do it and get the permits later, seriously, if he’s really concerned he’ll take some action. Obama wants damage to the wetlands so he can enact more regulation on oil an gas drilling to further drive up the price and make alternative energy a more viable alternative.

Jindal should just take action. He has a state economy to manage. He can’t worry about permits and such. He needs to act YESTERDAY!

The Obama Admin wouldn’t dare intervene for fear of making the wrong decision. They’re sitting on their thumbs waiting for BP to make all the decisions. BP has its own interests to consider.

Jindal has a responsibility to act on behalf of his constituents. Waiting for permission is tantamount to passing the buck.

I don’t understand why more attention is not being given to this?

Jindal needs to man up and just do what must be done. I don’t expect that however.

Dear Bobbie,
It is easier to obtain forgiveness than permission. Just do it. Use the Loosiana shrimper navy to fend off the feds and document any efforts by them to impede you. Invite Michael Moore and Sean Penn. Grow a spine.
Best wishes.

Exactly, that is what Brian Bilbray did when he was mayor of Imperial beach california.. he got tired of all the sewage and crap coming into his town from Mexico, and got a bull dozer and himself plugged the flow up...he got fed up waiting around for enviornmental impacts, corps of engineers. while his city was filling up with crap...

Its to late the damage is already done. Even if they started now the oil is already miles into the marshes, and where the oil is the marsh is dead.

Sounds like a no-brainer ... get it started NOW in the most endangered areas and, if it will take as long as they say, there’s plenty of time for mid-course correction.

As though the pathetic BO administration, populated by Marxist university professors and affirmative action hires, can take over this clean up!
Jindal and the parish administrators should get to work and build the sand berms to save their own wetlands. Carol Browner and other enviro-nazis who caused this disaster by forcing drilling off the continental shelf into water so deep no one can get down there, certainly have no expertise in anything but cowing their lapdogs in Congress into passing such insane laws.

Waiting for permission is tantamount to passing the buck.

YES!

You wait for permission IN NON-EMERGENCY situations.

A true leader takes charge and does what needs to be done.
Start the dredging Gov. Jindal! THe folks of Louisiana will support you! Make sure you have LOTS of media and cameras on hand to record the feds moving in and trying to stop it all. Be sure to make them explain WHY! This will really piss off the American public even more!

I hope the other governors of the other gulf states will do the same to protect their waterways!

Just wait til that oil hits Tampa Bay!
