I have an iPhone with a year left on the contract. Can I pay a penalty and cancel the service?

Sure, but does it save you money over a year? IF so,,, pay the penalty and fire them.

If the total cost of your monthly bill x 12 is more than the current termination fee, then cancel your contract and pay the fee.

Yes. If you are past 12 months, it should be $175 minus $5 for each month of contract fulfilled. So if you’ve been in contract it should be $175 - $60 = $115. Verify, dont take my word on it, but that is there posted policy at their website.
