U.S. Cautious not to Provoke War in Korea (oh brother)

Almost two months after a South Korean warship sunk mysteriously in the Yellow Sea, officials in Seoul announced an international investigation concluded a North Korean homing torpedo was to blame.

The Obama administration stood firmly behind the South Koreans on Thursday, calling the attack "unacceptable." White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said North Korea's actions will only further isolate them from the international community. "We strongly condemn this act of aggression against the Republic of Korea and send our condolences to those families of the 46 sailors that lost their lives," Gibbs said. Yet the administration was cautious not provoke a military conflict.

At a Pentagon press conference Defense Secretary Robert Gates refused to characterize the incident as an act of war. He said the U.S. will consult closely with the South Koreans, but it's up to them to determine the next move. "The key thing to remember here is that this was an attack on a South Korean ship and the South Koreans need to be in the lead in terms of proposing the way forward."

Who's doing the "provoking" exactly? The NORKS sink a South Korean ship, and we're the ones who have to be careful about provoking a war? Oh boy.

Maybe Zero will invite Chia Head to a State Dinner. Although Chia Head is scared of flying so it might take a few weeks to steam in to DC.

This is a terrible, but not at all surprising, situation. With No Ko having thousands of artillery tubes aimed at the millions of inhabitants of Seoul, plus having nukes, it seems like nothing but a truly existential threat type of act from the North could engender any type of military response by So Ko (and us). I’m surprised that there haven’t been more outright, flagrant war-type attacks on part of Dear Leader. What does he have to lose? All he’s going to get is Hans Brix delivering a strongly worded letter to Chia Pet (and, Chia’s surely got the shark tank stocked up and ready!).

I’d be interested in the thoughts of our several FR Korea/Asian experts.

A single. properly armed B-2 could easily solve the problem of these particular NoKo submarines, permanently.

I am sure that if Canada or Mexico sunk one of our ships we would consider it and act of war. It was an act of war and South Korea will our backing should have treated it as such. Obama is such a wuzz!!

This is actually the situation the NK wants. The US is tied up in two wars and would have minimal response if SK decides to invade. Actually, they are so poverty stricken that this may be the plan regardless of their current position.

I see this as a natural response to the weakness of the US (peace at all costs) and SK...

Things are really not looking good (for the US) with SK, Iran, Seria, and Russia contributing to the mix (weapons) - The outcome does not look so optomistic
...

God help us if they start demanding reparations from the U.S. for the war 60 some odd years ago.

Dems are grieving that their fantasy of engagement has crashed badly. They thought looking tough would cut it. Chia Head just called the bluff. This is a well-established pattern.

The moment outsiders thought they cornered him, he always escalates. Based on past experience, they know they can win the game of chicken most of the time.

More than likely the response will be a "no surface or submerged vessel zone". We will create a maritime DMZ where no NK military naval vessels will be allowed around the islands and along the coast.

Once that is done we put a SOSUS type system and then patrol and sink any subs if they don't surface.
