Wolf Blitzer Puts President Calderón On The Defensive Over Mexico’s Immigration Laws (what?)
Mediaite.com ^ | 05/20/2010 | Frances Martel

Posted on 05/20/2010 2:28:32 PM PDT by OldDeckHand

After appearing before Congress and attacking Arizona’s new illegal immigration law, Mexican president Felipe Calderón appeared on CNN to talk shop with Wolf Blitzer. Blitzer, rather surprisingly, turned the tables on the president, opting to ask him instead about his country’s immigration laws, and whether they were just as strict (if not stricter) than Arizona’s. Calderón admitted that laws were stringent in the past but clarified that it is currently not illegal to be undocumented in Mexico.

Citing a Washington Times article explaining Mexican immigration laws that incriminated those who willfully participated in illegal immigration or helped illegal immigrants, Blitzer asked President Calderón to contrast those laws with Arizona’s. Calderón replied that, while the Times assessment used to be true, it is no longer, and immigration cannot be illegal in Mexico. “Of course, on the border, we are asking people ‘Who are you?’” explained Calderón, and “Once they are inside the country, what the Mexican police do is, of course, enforce the law, but any means immigration is a crime anymore in Mexico… if someone does that, we find them and sending [sic] them back.”

Blitzer gets it right, perhaps for the first time in his career.

In essence what happened is that the President of Mexico came to our country and gave a speech in which he publicly bashed the citizens of the United States. It would be similar if the President of the United States went to Mexico and publicly bashed the citizens of Mexico.

President Obama and President Calderon both owe the citizens of the Unites States an apology and if our so called opposition party had some guts, they would be angrily calling for those apologies NOW!

Perhaps some of the Republican candidates can see an opportunity here.

CNN Interview

May 19, 2010

WOFF BLITZER: So if people want to come from Guatemala or Honduras or El Salvador or Nicaragua, they want to just come into Mexico, they can just walk in?

CALDERON: No. They need to fulfill a form. They need to establish their right name. We analyze if they have not a criminal precedent. And they coming into Mexico. Actually...

BLITZER: Do Mexican police go around asking for papers of people they suspect are illegal immigrants?

CALDERON: Of course. Of course, in the border, we are asking the people, who are you?

And if they explain...

BLITZER: At the border, I understand, when they come in.

CALDERON: Yes.

BLITZER: But once they're in...

CALDERON: But not -- but not in -- if -- once they are inside the -- inside the country, what the Mexican police do is, of course, enforce the law. But by any means, immigration is a crime anymore in Mexico.

BLITZER: Immigration is not a crime, you're saying?

CALDERON: It's not a crime.

BLITZER: So in other words, if somebody sneaks in from Nicaragua or some other country in Central America, through the southern border of Mexico, they wind up in Mexico, they can go get a job...

CALDERON: No, no.

BLITZER: They can work.

CALDERON: If -- if somebody do that without permission, we send back -- we send back them.

BLITZER: You find them and you send them back?

CALDERON: Yes.

He also admitted that they profile and that they will stop you for no reason to ask you about your citizenship.

He responded by saying “of course” when Blitzed asked him about it.

I first heard this Wolf Blitzer interview played back on Rush today. I was stunned that a CNN host could actually ask important questions and get telling answers. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.

Calderone is punk for Maobama.

So he denies that the Mexican laws are still tough on illegals in Mexico? Will the press then dig through the Mexican laws and find out if this is true (and when and why it was changed) or did Calderon just BS Blitzer because he had been caught.

I am quick to criticize CNN, so I will be just as quick to thank them. Good job, Wolf (for once).

Remember, every Nicaraguan who comes to the United States is stealing a job and money that rightfully belongs to a Mexican. < /sarc, or Mexican national policy, I can't tell which>

“Calderón admitted that laws were stringent in the past but clarified that it is currently not illegal to be undocumented in Mexico.”

BS. That’s an out and out lie. Just head down there and see what happens. Of course, as bad as it is, you’ll lose your head before they can lock you up.

He states that if they find someone who has snuck into Mexico, they deport them. Period.

I don't think they get an Immigration Hearing like they do in Arizona.

I suspect they get immediately carried to the border in chains and then deposited on the other side (after the Mexican Police have confiscated all their material wealth).

Rush was all over this today. He played Calderon’s speech to congress and then contrasted it with questions about Mexico’s immigration policy in an interview with CNN’s Wolfe Blitzer last night. Very revealing . It was must listen to radio. Rush at his best. I hope somebody downloads the recording so we can all listen to it.

Cannot find anyplace that talks about Mexico repealing their immigration law that makes it a felony to be in the Country illegally. Did Calderon dance around this one? Sure looks like it.

Mexico has never been any kind of ally of the US. They consistently vote against us and with Iran, etc. at the UN.

[snip]
Nevertheless, Mexico voted against the United States 62 percent of the time.
www.heritage.org/.../US-Foreign-Aid-and-United-Nations-Voting-Records

BUT, sometimes we bribe them to vote with us...

[snip]Under the same programme, Mexico received about 10 million dollars last year and 12 million dollars this year. It also received 28.2 million dollars in U.S. Economic Support Funds (ESF).(this was years ago, Mexico gets billions now)

http://www.globalpolicy.org/component/content/article/167/35053.html

How Mexico felt about Iraq: [snip]President Vicente Fox heavily criticized the war when it started and Mexican diplomats described their conversations with U.S. officials as hostile in tone and that Washington was demonstrating little concern for the constraints of the Mexican government whose people were overwhelmingly opposed to the war with Iraq.
