WASHINGTON - The number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly rose last week by the largest amount in three months. The big surge was a setback to hopes that layoffs were declining.
Applications for unemployment benefits rose to 471,000 last week, up by 25,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the first increase in five weeks and the biggest jump since a gain of 40,000 in February.

If these folks can’t predict one week in advance, why would anyone trust their longer range estimates?
Only unexpected to those who buy into the Obama hype.
The George Bush’s fault!!
It was unexpected because they’re believing their own rose-colored propoganda. The rest of us see a continuing downwards trend. We’re in a DEFLATIONARY trend, with declining consumer activity, declining manufacturing, governments facing big deficits, and the remaining taxpayers facing higher fees and taxes. What part of continuing layoffs doesn’t the gvt understand?
I think we need to fire them all and hire better forecasters. The current lot never expects anything that happens.
What’s up Divider-in-Chief and you putrid members of Congress?
unexpected? by who? we knew it would happen...
unexpected only by the incompetant boobs running the country now
DRINK!
Woot...yet another even that was not anticpated by the most incompetent presidency is history. Is there anything at all that the Obama regime has accurately anticipated? Or is everything "unexpected"?
If I were to write the history of the Obama regime the key word would be "unexpected". Apparently, despite what Al Sharpton claims, Obama's socialism was "unexpected"...and nearly every event during the Obama presidency has been "unexpected".
unexpected my @ss. Temp Census worker are getting terminated watch the number rise even more by Aug.
It’s unprecedented!
Once again, a bunch of schmucks who think they can run socialism better than the previous bunch of schmucks.
>>>If these folks cant predict one week in advance, why would anyone trust their longer range estimates?
And we’re to trust the same kind of government wankers about climate change...
To quote Jerry Seinfeld: "Who ARE these people?"
We are in a depression and it is turning into a bottomless pit.
LLS
We’ve gone from bailing out banks, mortgage companies, Wall St., car manufactures, and lately even other countries.....
Unexpected my backside.
In fact the last report I mentioned how they suddenly were not counting the people who have “given up” looking for work. They didn’t find jobs, they gave up.
The numbers are all manipulated and fake.
DRINK!
From everything I have read, Roosevelt spent about twelve years blaming Hoover for the great depression. Obama is just copying him.
I’m unexpectedly shocked!
