I served in that time period as a ROTC Lt. My service was limited to 115 days in Ft. Benning for Infantry Officers Basic Course (IOBC)and 3 summer camps of 2 weeks duration each (you couldn't get into a unit back then--in my area they were all filled with returning vets from Vietnam).
When our church asks for all the veterans to stand and be recognized for their service, I NEVER stand up. I am not in the same league as those who served longer or on a foreign field and I applaud all those who did. Blumenthal is the lowest of the low in my book.
I applaud your modesty & common sense.
Your service was that asked of you for the good of the nation.
When we held the parade for the first dedication of the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial I was there on the sidewalk taking a gazillion photos of the event ~ cost me hundreds of bucks to develop them ~ and as it came near an end there was a fellow out there I worked with, and he called me over to the parade and said "You belong here".
He'd been a forward spotter for Artillery. If he said I belonged there, then I belonged there although I only got as close to any sort of action down on the border between West Germany and the Czech Republic.
All of us went where we were sent.
