Rahm Emanuel's Judaism Through His Rabbi's Eyes
March 1, 2009 | By Alana B. Elias Kornfeld, Beliefnet
FR Posted Monday, March 02, 2009 By 2ndDivisionVet

EXCERPT White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel isn’t only known for playing hardball (he’s been called a “profane, hyperactive attack dog”). The former Chicago politician and chairman of the House Democratic caucus, is also known for something far more enlightened.......his religious commitment to Judaism.

Beliefnet recently spoke with Rabbi Asher Lopatin of Chicago's Anshe Sholom B'nai Israel Congregation--a modern Orthodox synagogue where Emanuel and his family are members (Rahm's wife is a convert to Judaism).

In Washington, Rahm's family are close to Rabbi Jack Moline's synagogue. The Emanuel children go to a community Jewish day school, the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School.

Rabbi Lopatin, who famously gave Emanuel permission to take a conference call on Rosh Hashanah (prohibited by the religious holiday's laws), offered insight into Rahm, the “model congregant” and how his faith influences his public work.

Q. Would you explain the difference between modern Orthodoxy and ultra-Orthodoxy for our readers?

A. Modern Orthodoxy believes that there are a lot of benefits to engaging the contemporary world outside of Judaism. It encourages engagement--and even struggling--with the parts of the outside world that seem strange. I think I should say that ultra-Orthodoxy has a negative attitude towards the outside world (Christianity) and basically feels that the more you can isolate yourself from the outside world (Christianity), the better.

Q. How would Emanuel classify himself in terms of his religious affiliation? I think you’d have to ask him.

A. Rahm and his family are members of our modern Orthodox synagogue....that doesn’t mean necessarily that they would classify themselves as modern Orthodox. He and the family are close to D.C. Rabbi Jack Moline and Rabbi Moline’s synagogue. The Emanuel children go to a community Jewish day school, the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, which doesn’t classify itself with any movement.

Q. You’ve also been at the forefront of a very big fight along with Rabbi Avi Weiss and Rabbi Marc Angel to gain control of modern Orthodoxy from the right wing. And so it stands to reason that your congregants, Emanuel included, would hold the same views.

A. I do try to speak out as much as possible on issues that I believe passionately about. One of them is the whole problem of the community not responding to people who would like to convert and who are sincere in their conversions. As well as issues of children who should be converted and accepted into the Orthodox halakhic community through conversion. I do find members of my synagogue—----and Rahm and Amy are, again, loyal members of our synagogue—----to be very supportive about my speaking out about these issues.

Q. Do you think Emanuel’s Israeli roots and religious practice will reassure Jews who are skeptical of Barack Obama’s commitment to Israel? (Rahm's father is an Israeli and Rahm was a civilian volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces c1991).

A. I think they will, and I think that even more significant is his work in the Clinton administration and his reputation as someone who wants to promote successful policies, policies that have broad-based support. I think it'll assure people that the Obama administration, if anything, will have very pleasant surprises and no real nasty surprises.

I have never had the least doubt about Obama’s support for Israeli. His position is crystal clear.

One of Emanuel's proudest moments during his tenure in the Clinton administration was when he directed the details of the "Mideast Peace ceremony" (the 627th "Mideast Peace ceremony" to date).

Rahm choreographed the famous handshake between Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO leader Yasser Arafat, in the 1993 Rose Garden signing ceremony. This event touched Emanuel's political sensibilities due to his lifelong personal and family ties to Israel (his father is an Israeli and Rahm was a civilian volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces).

No one knows how Emanuel felt when---predictably---war broke out between the "peace partners" shortly thereafter.

======================================

January 6, 2010, israelnationalnews.com
Israel Defense Forces Army Radio reported that Obama COS Rahm Emanuel met secretly in Los Angeles with Yaki Dayan, the Israeli Consul, 2 1/2 weeks ago.

The purpose of the meeting? Why, in no time flat, the US was streaming two ships into the Persian Gulf armed with anti-missile weaponry. How's that for quick service?

BACKSTORY Yaki Dayan reported to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem that Emanuel said: “ If there is no progress in the diplomatic peace process, we will reduce our involvement and effort in the conflict, because we have other matters to deal with”.........

ROTFL........that Rahm is such a kidder. Emanuel said all that for public consumption---to dupe Americans. No way Rahm would ever allow that to happen.

SOME AMERICANS MIGHT ASK Does it seem like Emanuel is over-reaching? Having secret meetings and discussions with foreign diplomats?

ANSWER Keep in mind, the Israelis are Rahm's bosom buddies. Rahm doesn't have to ask anybody's "permission" to meet with his friends.

Everything, and that means everything, about Obama’s background, from his infancy, to his formative years in Indonesia and Hawaii, to his higher education and his Pakistani and radical Weather Underground terrorist friends, right up until he set foot in the White House make it clear that he is an integral part of the anti-Israel propagandists and Islamist terrorist network. The Leftist movements of the organized Jewish community didn’t do much homework and even rebuffed those who put the facts in front of them They discounted the anti-Semitic world view of the Obama family’s 20-year mentor, Jeremiah Wright. They were too busy happily being duped by their own dillusional progressive leaders and by the jihadist actors at C.A.I.R. and busy buying into the “understanding Islam” progams that the jihadist mullahs in Saudi Arabia directed other jihadists to promote in the West to lull the West.

Many have recently awakened from their hypnotic state. They are realizing that Obama is an enemy of Israel and all Jews, a Trojan Horse who was installed in the White House. Enough red flags were waving during the campaign to fill Red Square.

Among the useful idiots who bought Obama’s idiotic “Change” chant were a lot of Jews, who mistakenly bought the bogus notion that Obama’s skin tone alone made his surprise appearance on the national scene the culmination of the Black civil rights movement in which they, their parents and grandparents had played a part.

What they are now realizing is that the real beneficiaries of their misplaced efforts are the Islamists whose sworn goal is to kill them. Today’s version of liberalism can certainly be classed as a mental disorder. A variation on the Oslo Syndrome is one aspect of this.

“The Obama administration has “screwed up the messaging” about its support for Israel over the past 14 months, and it will take “more than one month to make up for 14 months,” White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said on Thursday to a group of rabbis called together for a meeting in the White House”

If these rabbis believe Rahm, then they deserve what’s coming. The problem lay in the fact that obama and his gang of terrorist lovers didn’t lie enough to the rabbis to begin with and the policy was almost transparent.

Dennis Ross is an interesting fellow. As Pres. Clinton's “Special” Middle East envoy he helped push Israel into a spiral of violence and PLO/HAMAS rejection during the 1993-2003 period. For Israelis, everyday was a mini 9/11 during his wise guidance. After Pres. Bush came to power, he did what many has-been Strategy elite do - he formed an Institute an wrote books. In that interim period he did what he never could do while special envoy...namely, tell the truth about PLO/Arab rejectionism as the key reason to conflict in the Middle East. Now he's been resurrected again as a key player on the Obama team and he’s back to his old ways...again! Not telling the truth. Dennis, please go back to your Ivory tower and stay away from Israel like another resurrected, self-hating Jew, Martin Indyk, former US Ambassador to Israel. Keep these losers away from Israel, all they do, (with good intentions), is bring death to Israeli Jews...thanks but no thanks Dennis...

Ballet dancer Rahm is pathetic. He is Hussein Obama’s House Jew and a traitor to his people. He is only there to give the Kenyan Muslim cover as he sells out Israel.

Rahm is a curious little man. He must have some asset that uhbama needs? Experience? Willingness to go dirty/ Similiar Chicago thug style training? I wonder what the appeal was. It certainly could not have been upstanding or a desire for good character around the oval office.

Is Rahmmy, uhbama's house boy so to speak, still sending dead fish to political opponents? Ew. What a dirtbag.

Jack Moline... initiated the two meetings after a talk he had with Emanuel about the Obama administration’s perceived deficit of friendliness toward Israel.

“There was a lot of highlighting of the actual activities and policies of the administration,” Moline said – “and some frustration that” what the Obama administration has done for Israel “has not been comprehensively and accurately reported. They emphasized that whatever the messaging has been over the past year and half, the policies have been in place.
~~~~~~~
Well, whadyaknow, Obama's Isreal-friendly policies were being implemented all along, and the Obama-subverting MSM just wouldn't cooperate.
What relief! Somebody....Tell Bibi quick. Obama's Isreal-friendly policies were being implemented all along.
A photo released by the White House, which shows Obama talking on the phone with Netanyahu on Monday, speaks volumes.... As an enthusiast of Muslim culture, Obama surely knows there is no greater insult in the Middle East than pointing the soles of one's shoes at another person.
Jews are waking up and not donating to the DNC. Rahm, IMO, is a Kapo and his words ring hollow.
The Regime’s chickens are coming home to roost and their dirt is being exposed.
The Obama administration has "screwed up the messaging" about its support for Israel over the past 14 months, and it will take "more than one month to make up for 14 months," White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel said on Thursday to a group of rabbis called together for a meeting in the White House. "During the elections there were doubts about President Obama's support for Israel, and now they have resurfaced," Emanuel said, according to one of those who participated in the meeting. "But concerning policy, we have done everything that we can that is in Israel’s security -- and long-range interests. Watch what the administration does." Dennis Ross, who runs the administration's Iran policy, tried to allay fears during the meeting that by calling for a nuclear-free Middle East, US policy regarding Israel's alleged nuclear capabilities was changing.
US policy toward Israel hasn't changed since just after Zero was sworn in.
