Catholic League Wants Nothing More Than For Landmark To Honor Her With Lights, But So Far Has Gotten Cold Shoulder
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The USPS had a series of stamps dedicated to Mother Teresa, but the Empire State Building, it seems, wants nothing to do with her.
It's a familiar tradition: lighting up the Empire State Building in different colors to honor an important date or cause. So why would a request to pay tribute to one of the most loved and admired women in history be denied?
Mother Teresa's simple message was an inspiration to millions. She was honored for her work with hundreds of awards, including a Nobel Peace Prize.
So the Catholic League thought it would be nice to commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth on Aug. 26 with a sky-high honor, beaming the colors of Mother Teresa's congregation, blue and white, into the nighttime heavens.
"You have to make an application of course, so I went through the process on Feb. 2 to make the application to the Empire State Lighting Partners," said Bill Donahue of the Catholic League.
The building changes its colors to honor local sports teams, holidays, dog shows, cancer charities, and even the 60th anniversary of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.
But the people who run the Empire State Building, for reasons they have yet to explain, said it would not honor Mother Teresa.
"To deny Mother Teresa? No, this doesn't make any sense at all. I think it has an odor, and that odor stems from bigotry," Donahue said.
There was no explanation given to the Catholic League, and all CBS 2 HD got when we called them was a "no comment."
But tourists outside the famous landmark had their theory.
CBS 2 HD: "Do you think it's a religious issue?"
Angela Aquilino of Delaware: "Yeah, I think it might be."
"I think people have this separation of church and state thing. They're carrying it a little bit too far," added Amy Post of West Virginia.
However, they do decorate the building for religious holidays, like Hanukkah and Christmas.
So the reason remains a mystery. But the Catholic League said it's not taking no for an answer. It has started a petition and says so far it has 6,000 signatures.
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China under Communist rule and Mao's 1949 revolution, the Chinese will hold a military parade in Beijing on Thursday of unparalleled size -- 5,000 soldiers, 43,000 fireworks and a display of 52 new weapons -- followed by a civilian parade of 100,000 marchers and 60 floats, many chanting new nationalistic mantras coined by the Chinese government for the occasion.
For a nation that worships Mao, and the path of development and prosperity the Chinese people believe he charted, nothing less would do to commemorate its 60th anniversary.
But when it comes to the commemoration of China's 60th anniversary in the U.S., perhaps we could -- and should -- expect a little less.
Wednesday night in New York City, the Empire State Building will illumine its familiar spire with red and yellow lights in honor of Communist China. The Communism-themed color scheme will stay lit through Thursday night, much to the delight of China's consular officials, who were on hand for a ceremony in the lobby of the iconic building Wednesday morning, and to the acute dismay of the dozen or so protesters outside, and to many Americans who question whether honoring China's Communist revolution here is at all appropriate.

Mao Tse-Tung
AKA Chairman Mao, AKA 'The Great Helmsman'. (Tse-Tung can also be spelt Zedong. Translated the name means 'To Shine on the East'.)
Country: China
Kill tally: 14 to 20 million deaths from starvation during the 'Great Leap Forward'. Tens of thousands killed and millions of lives ruined during the 'Cultural Revolution'.
I hate progressives.
There's the problem right there. Millions have been sold on "separation of church of state," which is not in the constitution, instead of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;" which is.
Our system of government was not designed to operate in an environment of general ignorance and indifference.
the solution is easy. tell mayor bloomers that on her deathbed, mother teresa condemned America and converted to Islam. tell bloomers her last words were “no profiling by the great satan bush!” they’ll light the building up for her for a month.
Here's Obama's communications director, Anita Dunn, praising mass-murderer Mao Tse Tung and his communist revolution before an audience of **graduating high-schoolers**! (St. Andrews Episcopal school at the Washington National Cathedral). A video link is provided at the end of this post.
Anita Dunn: "The third lesson and tip actually comes from two of my favorite political philosophers, Mao Tse Tung and Mother Teresa. Not often coupled with each other, but the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point, which is: You're going to make choices. ... But here's the deal: These are your choices; they are no one else's.
"In 1947, when Mao Tse Tung was being challenged within his own party on his own plan to basically take China over, Chiang Kai-Shek and the nationalist Chinese held the cities, they had the army. ... They had everything on their side. And people said 'How can you win? How can you do this against all of the odds against you?'
"And Mao Tse Tung says, 'You fight your war and I'll fight mine.' You don't have to accept the definition of how to do things. ... You fight your war, you let them fight theirs. Everybody has their own path."..."
[The following is NOT from Anita Dunn. It's from the author of the linked CNS News article...]
Policies implemented under Mao Tse Tung, including the civil war, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and persecution in Tibet, among other policies, led to death of an estimated 65 million people, according to The Black Book of Communism (Harvard University Press), which is considered by scholars as one of the best sources on communist atrocities.
Mao also outlawed religion and sent at least 2.5 million people to re-education camps, called laogai, which were similar to the slave-labor camps in the Gulag of the Soviet Union. An estimated 1,000 laogai reportedly are still in operation today
