Pete Wilson to Meg Whitman's rescue

You know the GOP race for governor is tightening when Meg Whitman brings out the big gun -- former Gov. Pete Wilson -- to defend her position on illegal immigration.

Wilson, chairman of Whitman's campaign, is now appearing in a radio ad arguing that Whitman will be "tough as nails" on the issue.

"This is former Gov. Pete Wilson. I know how important it is to stop illegal immigration and I know Meg Whitman," he says in the spot. "Meg will be tough as nails on illegal immigration. She'll fight to secure our border and go after sanctuary cities."

It's a play Whitman advisers would have preferred not to make as they look ahead to a general election contest in California, where Wilson is persona non grata with many Latino voters who remember his political record on the issue.

In his re-election race in the midst of an economic downturn in 1994, Wilson sailed ahead of Democratic opponent Kathleen Brown by supporting Proposition 187 and running ads that focused on the cost of illegal immigration to the state's coffers.

I'll be voting for Steve Poizner in the primary; and,

... for Meg Whitman in the general (as it's not likely that Poizner will advance.).

I worry most about Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown, and the economic ruin he would surely sign into law.

Peta Wilson 2 Pictures, Images and Photos

She actually asked for Peta Wilson's endorsement, but her handlers didn't hear her right.

NOW is the time to be running ads on the cost of illegal immigration. First the costs, and then run ads on the unemployment figures.

The local talk show on KMJ 580 had Poizner on today. According to the interview, Poizner has closed to within a couple of points of Whitman, largely because the public has had enough time to hear Poizner’s message, and because her past support of liberals and their causes has caused a lot of people to abandon her by the droves! A rumor was that the Labor unions are backing Whitman with huge sums of money because they believe Brown can beat her, but that Poizner can beat Brown. Just a rumor though.

Pete Wilson's a tool. As I recall, he never got behind Hunter nor McClintock in any of their bids for office. He ran for re-election, got elected, then ran for Prez. when he said he wouldn't. Sorry, Meg, but the endorsement by Petey boy is the last nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned. Interesting how Whitman promises to be "tough" on illegals. Just like Wilson was? Don't make me laugh.

I forgot one thing that has worked in Poizner’s favor. He was endorsed by McClintock, that that matters a LOT to people too!

And Tom Coburn endorsed McCain (early) and Rubio endorsed Huckabee (early). People make mistakes. This might be the biggest one McClintock’s ever made.

Conservative CA Congressman Darrell Issa on Poizner:

"As Republican voters consider their options in this election, I hope they won't be fooled by politicians like Steve Poizner who are looking to secure their own election more than they are looking to secure our border."

Anyone who would send $10K to Al Gore in the heat of that Bush/Gore Recount Battle in Florida, like Poizner did, is no conservative. That was US vs THEM... and he sided with THEM.

But it isn't just his donations to Democrats.... Poizner also has a record of being against tax cuts. He spoke against the Bush tax cuts in 2004, in 2006 Poizner joined an effort to abolish Calif. Proposition 13, a law that places protections on local property taxes to keep them from being easily raised, and he also donated the amazing sum of nearly $200,000 in support of Proposition 39 back in 2000, another pro-tax effort. This coupled with the donations to Democrat candidates sure raises suspicions that Poizner is a typical tax and spend liberal.
