Did anyone just see Sarah Palin on the Factor just now? (vanity)

Posted on 05/06/2010 5:51:40 PM PDT by Borges

She mentioned a couple of times that The Constitution talks about 'inalienable rights'. Conflating the Constitution with the DOI has to be one of the most irritable trends in contemporary civic life. Most people quote them interchangeably. Anyone else bothered by how common this is?

It’s part of a larger issue. Everyone seems to do this. I think a lot of people think they’re two halves of the same ‘Founding Document’.

Governor Palin is Right that Carly Fiorina is the Best Choice for California Conservatives

If true, I hope someone with access to her people will set her straight. At least in the long run, Sarah can’t afford to mess up on our fundamental documents. I also hope someone has made sure that she uses the right words when discussing the fact that the Bill of Rights guarantees as legal rights the fundamental natural rights that God gave us. I know she gets the point, unlike most Republicans in DC and unlike any socialist in DC, but communicating precisely matters, especially considering the firestorm that she will continue to experience.

We're at the point now where you have to give credit to someone for even remembering that they exist, much less understanding what the body of the text infers. I'll overlook a little historical dyslexia as long as they get the gist of it. Form follows function, as they say.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

You, too?

The Constitution does talk about inalienable rights, specifically in the 5th and 14th Amendments. Life, liberty and property to be exact.

'Everyone seems to do this. I think a lot of people think they’re two halves of the same ‘Founding Document’."

Ask someone under the age of - say 50 - what the Federalist Papers are, or what the Magna Carta is. Most will look at you like you've spoken to them in a ancient Greek dialect.

Better yet, ask someone under 50 what year the Constitution was ratified, and where it was ratified.

While I think it is a serious lapse of intellect, it does not come up to Boxer saying people who want the Constitution upheld should vote for her because she knows the preamble.

Yes, it’s frustrating.

It seems like analytical/wise/knowledgeable people don’t often go into politics, however. Honestly, politics is rather a nasty business. I’m not saying Sarah isn’t intelligent. I certainly think her heart is in the right place.

I think so far one of the more careful, analytical politicians I’ve seen so far is Paul Ryan. He was a former staffer, though, which explains a lot.

Oh, what is the use of us wanting?
Where e’er there’s a will there’s a way.
Tomorrow the sun may be shining,
Although it is cloudy today.

Boxer’s line was funny but it was unique to her (thankfully!). While everyone seems to mix up these two documents.

Historically, early frontrunners for a party nomination usually do not end up being nominated. Gov Reagan was not the frontrunner in the year he won the nomination. IMHO Gov Palin may not be the GOP nominee if history repeats itself, unless the times we live in do not follow conventional rules. I think it will be someone else.

There is a big difference between Inalienable Rights (natural or moral rights) and Civil Rights which are contingent upon Laws.

The right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, are UNinalienable (Sovereign or God-given) Rights.

Now, did I muddy the waters with this post? If so, just ignore it.
