Specter Dupes His Party Leaders Again

As that wise sage Yogi Berra once said, "It's deja vu all over again." In 2004, the last time then Republican Senator Arlen Specter was facing a tough Pennsylvania primary challenge, he received eleventh hour endorsements from top GOP players that saved him from a humiliating primary defeat. He went on to win reelection and then promptly betrayed both the voters and his party by becoming a Democrat. Now, in another tough primary challenge, his new party's establishment is rushing to his aid.

Senator Specter who once held a commanding lead of his primary challenger, US Representative Joe Sestak (D-Pennsylvania) is fading fast. A recent Quinnipiac University poll showed the senator just 8 points ahead and today's Muhlenberg College/Allentown Morning Call daily tracking poll has that lead down to just 4 points. This has prompted Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman T.J. Rooney to warn members of his party that a Specter defeat could have “cataclysmic” consequences for the Senate campaign this fall.

The 'Save Specter to Save Your Party' message will sound eerily family to Pennsylvania Republicans who remember a similar message from then President George W. Bush and then Senator Rick Santorum, GOP heavyweights whose last minute endorsements over his then primary challenger Pat Toomey pushed Senator Specter to victory by a slim margin. Last month former Senator Santorum confessed that he endorsed Mr. Specter because, "we were going to have two Supreme Court nominees coming up. I got a commitment from Arlen Specter that no matter who George W. Bush would nominate, he would support that nominee." (source)

As Representative Sestak said following that admission, "Rick Santorum's stunning confirmation that Arlen Specter sold his influence as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee for a political endorsement should be extremely troubling to Pennsylvanians,''

Evidently neither that sale nor the blatant betrayal of his former party is troubling to the Democratic establishment. Chairman Rooney is pushing hard for a Specter victory saying, "If we want to keep this seat in Democratic hands, the only person capable of delivering that victory is Arlen Specter." (source)

That former Republican challenger Pat Toomey is now the presumptive Republican opponent either Specter or Sestak will face in November and he has strong leads over both Democrats in recent polls. (source) But if Senator Specter somehow manages to win both his primary and the general election in November, there's little doubt the Democratic establishment will learn their lesson the hard way: Arlen Specter's one and only concern is Arlen Specter; not his alleged principles, not his current party and certainly not the people of Pennsylvania.

Read paragraph 3. Rick Santorum's endorsement of Specter over Conservative Pat Toomey in the 2004 Pennsylvania GOP Primary, comes back to bite Benedict Arlen in the butt. Ya gotta love it.

There is a cabal of corrupt politicians in both parties, feeding from the same money trough, they know and protect each other regardless of “Party”. IMHO

Santorum’s an idiot. As if Toomey wouldn’t support Bush’s nominees?

Please, God, let the party bosses win this one: gnarly old Specter against Toomey? No problem.

But two (relatively) young Turks facing off against each other? Sestak is my congressman and he is as hard left as they come, but he presents a great image: Navy career, nice family, and uses all the American heritage lexicon easily. He could fool a lot of well-meaning centrist Dems who are fed up with the socialists and intend to bring their party back. I think Toomey would have a tougher campaign against Sestak than against Specter.

Good. A bruising primary and close win by Arlen would depress Democrat turnout even more.

Ref your Post #5: I hope you’re right. But, I still want to see Specter defeated ASAP. He has a way of pulling victory out of the jaws of defeat.

Toomey could, in the General Election, just label Sestak (should he defeat Arlen in the Primary)as "Specter Light".

I really think Arlen is at the end of his run. He flipped from Democrat to Republican to win his first election and now he's flipped back. Sestak is right, he sells his principles to the highest bidder. In that business you only get one switch.

How can the Dem base trust him? He may have been a RINO, but he still was opposite them on lots of votes and positions. If he gets another six year ticket does he just become a DINO?

Sestak has his own problems. If he gets the nomination he loses the independents that Specter attracts (or at least used to). Wouldn’t he just be another Martha Coakley? I’m very optimistic for Toomey however the Dems come out.

Lot of truth in what ya say there J Edgar.

Incidently, when I was a kid and would drink beer with friends while playing hearts or spades I’d call the F.B.I. collect and ask for J.Edgar.
Only once was it ever accepted and they asked me to quit it.

Specter was the chairman of the Judiciary Committee. I think the fear was that if Bush didn't support Specter, and Specter managed to win anyway, he would block Bush's Supreme Court nominees out of spite. If the nominee can't get through the Judiciary Committee, as I understand the way the Senate works, there could be no vote on the candidate on the floor of the Senate.
