Whitman wary of Arizona immigration law (candidates Campbell, DeVore, Fiorina, Poizner support it)

All but one of the top Republican candidates for governor and Senate support the new anti-illegal immigration law in Arizona, now that Steve Poizner and Carly Fiorina have joined Tom Campbell and Chuck DeVore in backing it.

“I think I have a better plan for California,” GOP governor candidate Meg Whitman told Register editorial and and news writers today. She reiterated her call to tighten up border security and crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants. She said that would address 90 percent of the problem – and that the Arizona law means a lot of legal controversy ahead.

“I have sympathy for what Arizona is going through and I understand their frustration with the abject failure of the federal government,” she said. “But if that law were to come before me, I would oppose it.

“I think I have a better plan for California: Secure the border, build an economic fence, eliminate sanctuary cities. And I think you get a long way.

“I think those will solve the problem and not necessarily create other problems.”

And the Arizona law will create problems?

“You’re already starting to see the lawsuits. It’s going to be a heyday for lawyers. This thing is going to be challenged every six ways to Sunday.

“So, for California – and I’m not judging Arizona, I do understand their issue – I’d like to secure the border, hold employers accountable, eliminate sanctuary cities. ..

And for illegal immigrants already in the country?

“My view is that if you hold employers accountable for hiring undocumented workers, many of these individuals and families end up going home. You can see what’s happened in the recession, right? There’s been less jobs and there’s been a net outflow of illegal immigrants because there aren’t the jobs.

“I think I have a better plan for California,”

Just give the State back to Mexico and make it official.

Yo Meg, coyotes, drug smugglers, hit men, rapists and day laborers don't care if you crack down on employers as their work is generally off the books anyway.

AZ has the right idea.

to Mexico, California is only the beginning. How about the fact that they want to shove all Americans into the 13 original colonies. One state goes, all of our homes are threatened.
