I fixed my drier too...I took a big part to the parts place and the guy laughed...he said, you didn't have to bring all that and just snapped of the part that was bad. I think it was $36.00...that success is what gave me the courage to 'fix' the dishwasher, lol.
Did you unplug it before taking the back off?
I have Kentucky roots, and it’s so naturally beautiful, I envy you.....however, I think you might be in or a bit of culture shock! Seattle to central KY...that’s one heck of a change. Good luck, and enjoy living in God’s Country.
My best friend and ex-pastor moved there a few years ago. We visited quite a few times before we considered buying. We’ve already established contacts and small roots in the area. The culture thing was one of my biggest concerns. :)
Starve the Beast.
Craigslist. Private sales. Trade. Help a friend with a project. Have them help you with one of yours. Clearance and outlet stores - stuff that is ‘seconds’ but it’s very hard to tell why.
Used cars in good shape. Cuts taxes, they don’t get peoples’ attention as much, but still good and reliable.
If they do have jobs, their hours are being cut. Hubby is down to 3 days a week and my seasonal p/t job is over. I had been trying to not go to the grocery store but we were eating through my preps so I had no choice but to restock the pantry this weekend. This is also a bad time of year because the kids are at the end of school terms so there’s graduation and college expenses for them, relatives, and friends. Nothing to do but hold my breath and hope we get through it.
This is just the first story set up to take the blame off of Obama. See, you tight-fisted frugal consumers, who aren’t going along with the Obama program, YOU are the ones screwing up the recovery, not Obama.
You companies who are laying off people because of the increased costs of having the privilete of doing business is the US and paying ever-increasing taxes, YOU are the ones screwing up Obama’s recovery, not Obama.
I’m just surprised they didn’t just come out and call the tight-fisted consumers racists.
I suppose that can always be put in a future story.
That is exactly what we are doing! We think twice and then again, about buying ANYTHING taxable. I go to the same 3 stores, once a month, and stock up. We don’t have a super Walmart, but I get some items there, my meats at BJ’s, and a few odd items neither store has at a grocery store. I also do not go to a store in between unless I run out of bread or milk. We don’t have a freezer with, so I do pretty well considering. And saves money.
“Their behavior suggests that the Great Recession may have bred a new frugality that will endure well into the recovery. And because consumers fuel about 70 percent of the economy, their tightfisted habits means the rebound could stay unusually sluggish.”
Blame the consumer!? OBAMA’S FAULT!!!
Same with us. There are a few things we need, and many other things that could use replacing, but we will make what we have suffice until the real recession/depression is over and folks are back to work!
I started gardening last year after he-who-shall-not-be-named was elected. I was amazed how much I could grow in the area we alloted. Enjoyed it so much my husband helped me build a greenhouse. The vegetables are SO much tastier that he was eager to encourage me to do more and we eat alot healthier, too. I rarely bought vegetables at the store, either, which was a nice bonus with the prices being so outlandish.
You sound like my wife. She’s the same way.
You’re right though people are helpless. I bought a bunch of home improvement books from the Goodwill, on plumbing, wiring, roofing, HVAC etc just in case we had to tackle some of this on our own.
I always think about how I figured out how to fix my computer when it has issues (not that I’m some IT pro or an electronics engineer). I’ve prevented a lot of trips to the Geek Squads of the world that are otherwise very expensive.
I look at that experience and wonder why this can’t be done with just about anything—it can be done.
Journalists are part of the political class (along with academics, government employees and politicians). They probably don’t know a single person who has lost a job (cause government workers never get laid off and are making far more than people in the private sector).
YESSSS! How stupid do you think I am?....I have an MBA...it was good for SOMETHING!
Let me testify.
Just the wife, dogs and I are spending over $1k/mo on groceries and beer/wine.
We don't drink much.
I don’t think you’re stupid at all ... you chose to fix it yourself! It’s just that some folks with little or no do-it-yourself experience think that since the machine isn’t running it isn’t electrically ‘hot’. I used to do lots of minor repair type work for shut ins and those unable to get out and about to do their own repairs. Learned alot ... forgot alot, too.
If anyone needs appliance parts there is a great place online to go to:
http://www.repairclinic.com/
They have a section where you can diagnose the problem then use your model number to order parts. My 15+yo Tappan oven last year quit working, the electornic panel went out on it. Hubby was able to find it and replace it in like 3 days as they ship really fast. I was thrilled that we didn’t have to spend a ton for a less featured oven than I have.He also fixed my dryer too.
I should have put a LOL after the sentence....I was laughing when I was typine it....I don’t take much very personally! Just making a smart crack back!
Every time I buy groceries, I buy an extra thing or two for my stash. It's an easy way to build up a good reserve. I hate canned goods, but I do buy them, because they keep so long, and it's possible to live on them. Next purchase: The commercial, folded toilet paper. It takes up MUCH less space in storage.
Walmart is cheaper on some items, but other items like meat are much cheaper at the regular groceries and they have sales all the time.
