War arsenal seized in Boquete

la prensa
This massive confiscation of weapons shows that the region continues to be a bridge for the transfer of weapons.

A ton and a half of military weapons was confiscated yesterday morning in what is being considered the largest seizure executed in the country.  The bust took place in the El Francés sector of the district of Boquete, where police uncovered the weapons in a private residence, whose occupant is a sociology professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Chiriquí.

Experts estimate that the arsenal, which may have originated from Central America, is quoted at more than $1 million on the black market.

The police commissioner of Chiriquí, David Ramos, said the teacher was taken into custody and that further investigations will reveal whether or not there are other individuals involved.

The seizure was made possible thanks to Operation Compa, composed of the National Police, the Narcotics Affairs Section, and the Judicial Investigation Department, with the support of the Public Prosecutions Office, which invested several months of research, surveillance, and monitoring in this case.

According to Ramos, the weapons had been in Chiriquí for some time, and were being stored in a room or bunker specially built for this type of arsenal. “While the weapons appear to be old, given the manufacture date, they are still active," said the commissioner.

Among the weapons seized include AK-47 ammunition, 250 Russian fragmentation grenades, 13 blocks of TNT, 60 packs of TNT, 186 60-caliber mortar rounds, 100 RPG grenades, 24 AK-47 sub-machine guns, and 47 AK-47 assault rifles.

The version in Spanish has more:

A ton and a half of military weapons, considered the largest seizure executed in the country, was seized yesterday morning at the home of a Nicaraguan professor of sociology (University Panama David) in the El Francés area south of Boquete,

My bet is that these arms were shipped here by the Ortega/Chavez/Castro gang and the bills were probably paid by China/Iran.  The next question is how big is the cache they haven't found yet.

Has there ever been a "sociology professor" who was NOT a freakin' commie radical?

Is this the villa I was buying? The seller assured me that the bunker comes with the rest of the property.

When the class won't sit quietly, the prof sometimes fires an AK-47 into the air.

It’s pretty obvious to me, commissioner.

Time will tell.   I'd really want to believe that we're looking at old left-over's from decades ago, but Obama just set Noriega free.

Coincidence?

I have no doubt they came from the Chavez/Ortega/Castro/Obama cabal, but where were they headed? To Marxists in Honduras and Colombia, or the to US?

This makes my skin crawl.

Any ideas as to where and against whom they were going to be used?

And as stated, how many more are still hidden?

I haven’t been out yet to buy the paper, so this has taken me by surprise.

Also, Don Winner dosn’t have anything on his blog yet.

Hey I'm SO glad you came back to me here, I tried to ping you but I kept getting your freepname wrong!

The story just came out this morning so you know everything that I do.  My wife and I are planning on checking out the new road from Volcan to Boquete and I'll let you know if I come across any new rumors.  Remember that Noriega's from Chiriqui and that Torrijos started his coup here.  That, and a few years ago when the were expanding the David airport they accidentally dug up a mass grave.

Maybe I need to go hide under my bed for a while.  Say, a year or two?

a 60mm mortar round?

Probably.  The words 'mm' and caliber get mixed up a lot when they sell sheet metal too.
