Rep. Hunter: Deport U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | April 28, 2010 | UT

Rep. Duncan Hunter has roiled an already volatile immigration debate by saying that U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants should be deported.

The East County Republican’s comments surfaced Wednesday on a YouTube video of a tea party event in Ramona on Saturday.

The video shows him speaking about the need to crack down on illegal immigration and then responding to a question from the audience about certain children who are born in the United States and, thus, automatically become citizens.

“Congressman, would you support the deportation of natural-born American citizens that are the children of illegal aliens?” the questioner asked.

“I would have to, yes,” Hunter responded. “And I’ll tell you why. You know, this is a, it’s a complex issue and it’s, you know, you can look and say, ‘You’re a mean guy. You know, that’s a mean thing to do. That’s not humanitarian.’

“We simply can not afford what we’re doing now. We just can’t afford to do it. California’s going under. How much in debt are we, $20 billion? ...We just can’t afford it. That’s it.

“And we’re not being mean. We’re just saying it takes more than walking across the border to become an American citizen. It’s what’s in our souls, not just walking across the border.”

Hunter could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.

"This man is my congressman."

May we borrow him for a while, 25 years or so, in San Antonio, Texas to represent us?

UH .......to the prestitute.... “The children of illegal aliens are illegal aliens..... not citizens, much less Natural Born Citizens......they should go home with their parents to their own country.......”

Hunter don’t let these jerks get away with saying things like that unchallenged.......Get em man! Rip em up!

natural-born American citizens that are the children of illegal aliens?

"Natural-born" means that both parents are citizens.

The 14th Amendment was never intended to grant citizenship to the children of invaders or visitors.

Its actually pretty much undefined. Anyway, its actually humanitarian to consider children of illegal immigrants as illegal immigrants. COnsidering them to be US citizens will seperate them from their parents.

Why should the result of a crime (illegal immigration), be ill gotten gains (US Citizenship)?

We may need an amendment to the Constitution. If your mother is legally here when you are born in this country, you are automatically an American citizen. Thus a baby of a student going to school on a visa here would be a citizen. Someone born to a resident or tourist here would be the same. But a child born to an illegal here is ILLEGAL. Period.

The fourteenth amendment disagrees.

You know, this is why my grandfathers were citizens as the sons of first generation Italian and Polish immigrants. Our ancestors didn’t all come over on he Mayflower like Duncan Hunter’s.

If you want to change the law, amend the constitution, fine. But the 14th amendment is pretty clear right now.

Also, the bit about citizenship being in our “souls” is laughably stupid. This is a legal question, not a spiritual one. Souls don’t come into it: there is no magical “American” quality to Americans’ souls.

I agree with you.

Meanwhile, the kids go with their parents — right back to the their home country, where they can be citizens, right along with their parents.

Deport the parents. . . the ‘chilren’ can either go with them or stay behind and be adopted because they have been abandoned.

All this wailing and crying about separating illegals from their brood is nonsense, as the US is NOT forcibly separating illegals from the child. The illegal alien parents make that choice.

Just venting. . . .

As Milton Friedman stated we can't have open borders and a welfare state. We are the only first world country in the world that borders a third world country. As such there needs to be additional controls put into place. As stated before these are not your granddaddy’s immigrants. Anchor babies are used as a tool to gain access to government entitlements. Remove the entitlements and you remove the incentive. The reason this problem has festered for so long is that BOTH PARTIES felt it was in their interest to keep them coming. As for the rats it has always been about amnesty and votes. The repubs are just as much at fault because of their desire for cheap labor. Combine both and you end up with where we are at today. The solution in my opinion is two fold: 1) starve the beast by going after the source of their money, that being the unscrupulous employers who employ them. 2) Deny benefits to those already here and believe you me they will quickly start to depart. They are here for the money both private and public. Cut off both and watch the exodus.

I am liking him more and more.

If he had just a bit more political experience, I would like to see him vie for ‘the big office’ soon.

I agree with this statement. We are a nation of laws. I know if you go to court looking for justice in a situation where you have “unclean “ hands in the situation you are in, the courts will not grant you a judgement in your favor because your hands are “unclean” in the situation.

A child born to a person in this country illegally would be considered to have “ unclean” hands by breaking the law to cross the border. Therefore, each and every act committed by this person subsequently would be illegal, including claiming because a child was born here, they are a citizen.

Compassion (which we all should have) cannot be a motive in interpretation of a law, only in the sentencing of the guilty. They must be found to be non citizens and then we must offer the parents the option of what they want to do with the child, but the border jumper must leave. They can leave with or without the child. The child can be adopted by a wanting legal family or they can take the child with them back to their home country, but it should NEVER make it ok for the border jumper to remain here. Compassion in sentencing, not in interpretation of the law.......

He could add that there is a similarity to the rules of evidence in a court case. You are not allowed to introduce evidence that was collected illegally....it's called "Fruit of the Poisoned Tree".

Likewise I would consider the children of people here illegally "Fruit of the Poisoned Tree", and therefore inadmissible.

“Natural-born” means that both parents are citizens.”

I know that....you know that.....but apparently the “journalist” asking the question doesn’t know that, or is (s)he persuing an agenda?.....

We have to be careful dealing with the press....by phrasing that question the way the “Journalist” did (s)he was planting into the mind of any listener that NBC means born in the US....ergo Obama is an NBC......Not!

Rep. Hunter should be aware enough to nip that in the bud, by restating the question correctly... Illegal immigrant children of illegal immigrants should go back home with their parents....

As Rush often says “words mean things” We need to train ourselves not to accept the agenda driven words of the press...IMHO
