How would this law work? I am a citizen and have a driver’s license. If a cop stops me for running a stop sign, does that mean he demand proof of citizenship for me and everyone in my car? Is that really what people want?

Hush up, they won’t ask us for our papers, we look like Americans.

Just wait until the price of childcare, cleaning, construction, restaurants and lawn care goes through the roof.

If you have a license, you would just get a ticket like usual. There would only be a problem, if you left your wallet at home, and then you would only have to convince him that you were legal, or the judge later.

Is that really what is going to be going on though??? From what I’ve heard from the governor herself there will be VERY strict rules to prevent that sort of thing from happening.

The law requires that in order to even question you about your immigration status, there must be reasonable suspicion that you are not in the country legally.

IOW if you present a valid Arizona Driver's license, then the questioning would have to stop there, because your legal status has already been determined by the DMV.

But if you were driving without a valid license, did not have a valid registration on your car, had no proof of insurance, and you could not speak a word of English, then I think the officer might have a reasonable basis for suspecting that you are not legally in the State of Arizona.

You got a problem with that?

I doubt Arizona issues driver’s licenses to illegals. Not even California does that (Not YET anyway. The CA “illegal alien sympathizer” legislators have made NUMEROUS attempts to get licenses issued to aliens).

My point is.. If you have a DL, no worries. If you’re driving without a license, an officer has EVERY right to handcuff you at a minimum, with illegals getting the added deportation orders. That’s how it SHOULD BE anyway. In CA, an officer will arrest an illegal w/out a DL, but is prohibited from questioning citizenship. THAT’S not right.

3 cheers to Arizona. “Illegal” is illegal. What’s the fuss?

That’s exactly what we want. Maybe you’re a coyote smuggling illegals across the boarder. /s

Don’t be ridiculous, the cops aren’t going to pull you over while driving Mexican. (most won’t)

What I want is an identity card (fool proof) to carry with my drivers lincense, not a big deal but it should also be used at the polls. The gov. can track any law abiding citizen through our social security #s as well as throught our phones and computers what’s the big deal?

Sounds like you're a squish on enforcing the laws on illegal immigration.

Just how do you propose we enforce the law, if you think it's wrong for law enforcement officers to even ask people for proof of legal entry?

Has it occurred to you that if our country aggressively enforced our immigration laws, that in a very short time, no one would be stopped on suspicion of being illegally in this country?

I'm sorry, but illegal immigration is one of the worst problems this country faces. We're either going to get tough about it, or we're going to cease to exist as a sovereign nation.

Nope, not me. I value being secure in my person and property and I want my citizen status to continue to be taken for granted by law enforcers. I don't vant to show you ze papers.

“Is that really what people want?”

Your drivers license, unless it is issued by a state that doesn’t check your BC, is proof of residency status.

And cops routinely do check the ID of passengers. The first thing a cop will do is ask for your “papers”.

A few years ago I was stopped at an interior border crossing check station on a Tx highway coming back from South Padre. I was asked whether I was a citizen and asked to show my license, etc. and I never even left the country! Furthermore, while I did have a slight tan, I don’t look remotely hispanic. I am curious how I would have actually proved I was a citizen without my birth certificate if I was pressed on the point. Luckily he just took my word for it at the time. Yours is a good question, but my assumption would be that most illegals will have no driver’s license or identification at all (other than something from their country of origin).
