Neighbors of New Yorker, Kitty Genovese, back in the 1960s listened a long time to Kitty’spiercing screams from her apartment, but did nothing and did not phone the police.

People afterwards said “Tsk, tsk, what is wrong with people?” and lots of analyses appeared.

This heroic man, himself bereft of home, retained and proved his humanity.

Telling comment by a reader:

“I am born and raised in the lower east side, NYC, and honestly, I don’t miss it either. I only miss my friends. All the city is now is a big giant dive bar for jerk off out of town scum bags, teenage hoodlums with no respect, and a dirty, rat infested ****hole.”
