UK 'no-fly zone' to last at least another day ( Eyjafjallajökull )
Times ^ | April 18, 2010

The Government indicated tonight that the Royal Navy could be used to ferry passengers back to Britain, as the ban on UK flights was extended until at least 7pm tomorrow.

The announcements came on the day that international airlines and pilots demanded a relaxation of the no-fly zone which has grounded most flights across northern Europe for the past four days.

Forecasters have warned that the cloud of ash from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, in southern Iceland, could remain over Britain until at least the end of next week.

The International Air Transport Association has warned that airlines will lose at least $200 million (£130 million) per day in revenues during the disruption.

The flight shutdown is estimated to have cost the European travel industry more than £1 billion...

The Civil Aviation Authority said that Nats was following international safety guidelines by refusing to provides services to commercial jets.

The regulator said that its records show ten serious incidents involving volcanic ash, two of which — a British Airways Boeing 747 near Jakarta in 1982 and a KLM 747 near Anchorage in 1989 — resulted in all four of the aircrafts’ engines shutting down.

Here’s the big picture. You run an airport in Stuttgart, Germany...and expect sixty flights a day to take off (most are forty to sixty passenger planes). You can take a week like this and just whine about it. Two weeks? You start to identify people to layoff. At the third week...you start cutting people and trimming expenses.

Look around....the tourist and vacation business is critical. Thousands of people are involved in people movement and vacations. You are barely six weeks away from the start-up period when people would take off for Greece, Turkey, and Spain. If airlines can’t move them....then the whole market falls apart. We aren’t talking just a billion or two....it could be tens of billions for a two-month period.

Look at Fedex and UPS. They can’t guarantee their customer in Georgia or Florida of getting the items to the right places. Unless they fly under the southern portion of Europe and drop off goods in Italy to be trucked over Europe....then this whole mess becomes an issue for them.

So as next weekend comes...and the volcano is still in fifth gear....I’d start to look at the business operations at Frankfurt’s airport and how it’ll shut down.

The cruise lines might be able to haul some former airline passengers who are stuck on the wrong side of the pond ?

Mark my word, in the next 10 days you will hear that this is the fault of The United States of America! Seriously you will hear that because of our massive consumption of energy we have caused a shift in the winds and it is up to Obama to fix the mess by taxing the American people and charging Bush with a crime!!

I find it surprising they keep talking about this volcano eruption as though it is something that will pass in a couple days like a rain storm. I thought these things can spew ash in the air for years.

” Wonder how long before airline layoffs start? “

” Scandinavian airline SAS warned it would temporarily lay off up to 2,500 employees in Norway starting Monday
if flights halted due to a giant cloud of volcanic ash remained on the ground.”

Seriously, I doubt what you scribed above will come to fruition.

That said, and Seriously, there will be new (higher) taxes imposed next year on the American people - regardless of what happens in Europe.
