The Trouble with Trey Grayson: Attacking Conservative Ideas and Sarah Palin

by Erick Erickson

Let’s look at the NRSC’s favored candidate Trey Grayson for just a minute. The man has refused to take a substantive position on bailouts, etc. for the longest time. He’s peddled false smears against Paul that Paul is pro-choice. In fact, Rand Paul is very much pro-life, but thinks because abortion is a non-constitutional issue contrary to Roe v. Wade, it is an issue for the several states to ban and not for Congress, except for the bit about defunding federal payment for abortion, which he gladly supports doing.

Then there is the latest.

Grayson is behind in the polls with not much longer to go. He has hurled as many wild attacks at Rand as possible. He is now even attacking Rand for being a conservative on issues like Medicare and Social Security. Seriously — Trey Grayson is attacking Rand Paul for wanting to reform both entitlement programs, including allowing workers to invest their own social security money as they see fit.

And the icing on the cake? Now Trey Grayson is attacking Sarah Palin because Palin endorsed Rand Paul. Grayson says Palin is unfit for office and he questions her judgment.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Republican that D.C. Republicans say we should all get behind.

Not me.

Or me and this is why it’s not enough to elect a Republican, because they are hardly better than those criminals currently occupying offices across the land.

I just have trouble trusting Rand Paul to be anything other than his daddy’s puppet. I do hope I’m wrong.

Not that I’m enamored with Grayson’s candidacy either. I guess on balance Paul is “better,” but that may not be saying much.

Did you feel that way about George W. Bush being his daddy’s puppet? Just curious.

If Bush was his daddy's puppet, he'd have been a bad one. Bush 41 hiked taxes; 43 cut them. Bush 41 halted the advance into Iraq; 43 invaded it.

Have to admit, I’m not a libertarian or a Ron Paul supporter, but this Grayson guy is a disaster in the making.

Of course, re: the abortion issue, there are a lot of FReepers who likewise can’t their heads around someone being pro-life and pro-federalism at the same time - witness the attacks on Fred Thompson about it back in 2008.

witness the attacks on Fred Thompson about it back in 2008.

The problem I had with Fred Thompson was not federalism but the fact that he was inconsistent. If an unborn child is a person, the circumstances of his conception are irrelevant to his right to life. Saying you are pro-life and then being for abortion in the case of rape puts one into the same philosophical corner that Obama is in. I.E. being pregnant is a punishment only for those who deserve it.

Grayson: “Some people in college tried pot,” he said. “I tried Clinton.”

Was he smoking Clinton? I'd better not go there. The fact the that the guy, or anyone, could get high on Clinton (i.e. Power) is vastly more disturbing than the fact that he thinks that youthful indiscretions are OK (they are not). It would have been better for Trey if he had tried pot.
