Flood waters are striking the Fljotshlid area near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. This flood is said to be much bigger and faster than yesterday’s and people in that area of South Iceland are being told to evacuate immediately....

The flood water contains large chunks of ice and roads and bridges south of the glacier are in serious danger of destruction.

There’s only one way to stop this. Throw Al Gore into the volcano to appease Thor.

There is currently extreme flooding in the Markarfljót river due to the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The Civil Protection Department fears that the levees won’t hold and has ordered an emergency evacuation in the Fljótshlíd and Landeyjar districts in south Iceland.

The flood is now rushing out from underneath the glacial tongue Gígjökull down the Markarfljót river channel at a speed of approximately ten kilometers per hour. There are giant icebergs in the river, the size of cars, RÚV reports.

Some damages have already been caused to the levees at Mt. Thórólfsfell and is flowing into the Fljótshlíd district. Chief constable at Hvolsvöllur Sveinn K. Rúnarsson said the flood is now approaching the levees at Háamúlar.

Rúnarsson said the evacuation is going well; it is finished in Fljótshlíd and is about to finish in Landeyjar. Search and rescue team members have been called out to help residents in the region.

Road construction workers who were working on repairing the bridge across Markarfljót have left the area

They’re afraid the levees won’t hold? Why, hell, that’s George Bush’s fault.

Seriously, prayers up for those folks.

Iceland can’t catch a break, always wanted to visit, but I guess that’s going to have to wait.

LONDON (Reuters) - A huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano turned the skies of northern Europe into a no-fly zone on Thursday, stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers.

The European air safety organization said the disruption, the biggest seen in the region, could last another two days and a leading volcano expert said the ash could present intermittent problems to air traffic for 6 months if the eruption continued.

Even if the disruption is short lived, the financial impact on airlines could be significant, a consultant said. The International Air Transport Association had said only days ago airlines were slowly coming out of recession.

The volcano began erupting on Wednesday for the second time in a month from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. It hurled a plume of ash six to 11 kilometers (3.8 to 7 miles) into the atmosphere, and this spread south east overnight.
