Arizona's immigration strategy: Make life tough
L.A. Times ^ | April 14, 2010 | Nicholas Riccardi and Ashley Powers

The bill passed this week reflects the government's belief that illegal immigrants will leave or stay away if conditions are harsh enough. Critics say it doesn't work.

Reporting from Phoenix and Tucson

For years Arizona's government has tried to deter unlawful immigration with a consistent approach -- make life for illegal immigrants so uncomfortable and uncertain that they will leave, or never come in the first place.

So this week, when the House of Representatives passed what's viewed as against illegal immigration in the nation, it was the continuation of a pattern that has been widely popular in the state.

"When you make life difficult," said state Sen. Russell Pearce, author of the current bill and earlier hard-line measures, "most will leave on their own."

There is evidence that is true. The number of illegal immigrants in Arizona dropped 18% between 2008 and 2009, the largest decrease in the nation, according to federal estimates.

"People are not going out to restaurants. They're afraid to do things with their families," said Sergio Gaxiola, 57, who works in Nogales. "The pressure has been building."

In 2007, the state passed first-in-the-nation penalties for employers who don't ensure their workers are in the country legally. The law led many illegal workers to conclude that they could never find steady jobs in Arizona.

Last year, the state enacted a law making it a crime for state workers to give illegal immigrants unauthorized benefits, which scared many from applying for government assistance they are legally allowed.

Life’s tough all over these days, why should illegals be spared that.

Maybe it’s less tough back where they are LEGAL citizens.

Yes, I'm sure if you make life easier on them by handing out free bennies off of the taxpayer dime, they will be self-deporting in droves.

It all boils down to the basics: If you want more of something, reward it. If you want less, punish it. Punishing the illegals will necessarily result in fewer illegal aliens in the punishment zone.

Az has 10% + unemployment. Why should illegals take jobs? What taxes do they pay? Sales tax, gas tax, they don’t pay SS tax, Medicare, Medicaid, Income tax. If they are paying it, they have used stolen, fake, fraudulent ID’s and SS. That makes them criminals.

I live in AZ. I’ve had enough of it and the crime it brings along.

People are afraid. Then go back home. I am sick of paying for you illegals. Hopefully this will make life tough on Juan McCain too.

Life is tougher on Americans who cannot afford to have kids because they are paying for the illegals brats or papi who is in jail for some sex crime.

I was think about that very fact last night. There a many Americans that limit the size of their families, limit what they can do as a family, because their budget doesn’t allow for it. They are limiting their lives and having to adjust because they are having to pay for other people who aren’t “responsible”.

We are almost at the tipping point, where there are more more “Pauls” than “Peters”. Then when that occurs, we are toast.

Many Americans are afraid. Afraid that they’ll be killed by Mexican drug smugglers or some drunk uninsured illegal behind the wheel of a car. That stuff happens all the time and the blame lies squarely on those officials who will not enforce our immigration laws. Dems and RINOs.

""The bill in its totality is designed to make life miserable for immigrants in the state of Arizona," said Chris Newman, legal director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. "

I am under the impression that legal immigrants have papers proving their legal status in the USA. I guess that Newman is talking about "undocumented immigrants", such as Barak Hussein Obama.

I REALLY don't understand this. ILLEGAL aliens are LEGALLY allowed government assistance?

You want to stop illegal immigrants. You put the army on the border with orders to shot to kill. That will stop it once and for all.

El problemo es que la situaciones en Mexico no es facil tanto y no es possible por mucho of los migrantes de regresar a los ciudades.

I am not that good with Spanish but what I am saying is Mexico is screwed anyway.

All this is going to do is push them to other places.Maybe they will move to Canada o Quebec.

No sympathy for illegal aliens.....they broke the law.....if they do not like it, they are free to return to the land of their origin. They should be thankful this is not North Korea
