Israel accuses Syria of providing Scud missiles to Hizbollah

Israel's president has accused Syria of double-dealing amid allegations that Damascus has handed over an arsenal of Scud missiles to the Lebanon-based terrorist group Hizbollah.

Reports claim that Hizbollah operatives have been trained in the use of Scuds, some models of which have a longer range than its current arsenal and could hit any city in Israel from Lebanon.

They say Israel is threatening to bomb targets in both Lebanon and Syria if additional claims that the missiles have been physically moved across the border and placed under Hizbollah control are verified.

"Syria claims it wants peace while at the same time it delivers Scuds to Hezbollah whose only goal is to threaten the state of Israel," Shimon Peres, the Nobel peace prize-winning Israeli president said yesterday.

The United States, which has been moving towards closer relations with Syria, is also said to be alarmed. Washington this year agreed to send its first ambassador to Damascus for five years, but a hold has been put on his taking up his appointment.

Hizbollah is known to have a large stock of short and medium-range missiles, which it has been replenishing since its war with Israel in 2006.

Among them are Zelzal missiles of Iranian origin, which could be used to hit major cities such as Tel Aviv. That alone causes some analysts to be sceptical of the latest reports.

Handing over Scud missiles to Hizbollah would risk involving Syria in any new conflict without adding substantially to the group's strategic options.

Because of their size and payload, Scuds are regarded as "tie-breaking" - their deployment would be regarded as an act of war which would bring an immediate all-out response by Israel.

Hizbollah has already suggested that a resumption of war with Israel is inevitable. That has the potential to

BS! Israel fought with political correct restraint in '06. They should have fought all-out then. They do that again and it may be their last.

some of Saddams weapons that were buried in the Bekaa Valley?

Sooner or later, someones going to use those - and with oybummer showing such hostility to Israel, they may well believe now is the ideal time to hit Israel - as they can be pretty much assured that when Israel defends herself, she won't get help from the US - and with no help from the US - there will be none from anywhere else.
