Rep. Michele Bachmann, a favorite of the tea party movement, appears to be doing her best to avoid picking sides in one of the Republican Party’s most closely watched Senate primaries.
Appearing on “Fox News Sunday,” Bachmann (R., Minn.) was asked whom she was backing in the contentious race in Arizona, pitting incumbent Sen. John McCain — the Republican Party’s standard-bearer in the 2008 presidential campaign — against former congressman J.D. Hayworth. Hayworth has been working hard to win the support of tea party backers and other conservatives uneasy with McCain’s perceived moderation, and polls show a tight race.
“I know both gentlemen, and they’re both honorable men,” Bachmann said.
Bachmann wasn’t so reticent about Florida’s Republican Senate primary, saying she was backing Marco Rubio over incumbent Gov. Charlie Christ.
The lawmaker’s comments about the Arizona race come days after Sarah Palin, another popular figure within the tea party movement, traveled to Arizona to publicly campaign for McCain, who had picked her as his vice presidential nominee in the 2008 race.

Michele Bachmann is quite a lady.
Or as my grandmother endearingly would have said: “a good ol’ gal.”
While not as bad as that other woman who claims to be independent of the GOP and puts principles ahead of political favors, this shows that this woman too will be responsible for Juan McAmnesty getting re-elected. It's sad that those that offer so much promise end up failing like a bad lotto ticket.

Not endorsing an incumbent colleague is tantamount to an endorsement of the opponent. At least as close as you can get without breaking long held protocol.
No. Failure would be endorsing McCain.
"Long held protocol" in the GOP is what got us Obama and a country that is farther than the founders' intent than ever before. Besides, how about how many times this incumbent has slapped all of his colleagues in the face by buddying up to Kennedy and Feingold and voting against conservatism over and over?

She's taken exactly the same position as Jim DeMint. To me that is damning indictment of John McCain from a siting congresswoman.

I agree. There was no excuse for the hordes of GOP idiots to endorse Specter, Chafee, or now, McCain. At a minimum, they need to remain neutral. But the ENTIRE GOP establishment, minus Bachmann and DeMint that I’m aware of, are campaigning for McQueeg
Bachmann is smart enough to know that if she endorsed Hayworth, the press would have a field day with the clear 'ideological differences' between her and her friend, Sarah. Of course, so would the usual suspects here on FR.
She played smart politics as usual.
Ironically, one of the very same arguments used against Sarah for endorsing McCain.
I really like Michelle. I would have preferred she came out for JD but I respect her decision. McCain is horrible.
Not a tough call perhaps, but elected reps. like Michele should be guarded about who they back sometimes,, or just stay out of the race altogether and let the actual state resident voters make up their own minds.
That's was the final straw that ruined Palin for me in the primaries. Of course, IF SHE IS NOMINATED, I WILL VOTE FOR HER IN THE GENERAL ELECTION. But I will support a principled person over a good lookin' speaker that just claims to have principles. Further, this isn't the difference between somebody like Crist and Rubio (go Rubio!), this is supporting a democrat-lite that has slapped conservatism in the face whenever possible vs. a true conservative. Shame on the whole establishment and these two ladies.

BTM, she did the smart thing by staying out of it and praising them both only on their honor. She’s rare among in-power Pubbies to not have backed McCain and she should get credit for that. Her take on the race comes through just fine!
I got a feeling McPOS is a vindictive SOB. If he wins he’ll go after the JD supporters in whatever way he can.
Failure would be endorsing McCain.
