“...Marines feel they have a handle on all the old issues, we shall see once they dig through this particular crash.”
I believe you’re right. My son is a Phrog pilot, and as much as he loves the aircraft, an old design is an old design.
Tell your son to stay safe.
Damn. They operate out of Kirtland here in Albuqueque, and fly over my house often. Prayers up.
Tell you son he's doing great work and not to listen to any of the 2nd Lt.’s on where the drop zone should be. Get a second opinion from an NCO jumpmaster!
The V-22 is vitally needed in our operations.I hope this is not a major setback.I do have to say that this program has been pushed hard for years just like most other pentagon gold plated machines.
We pray for the families of our fallen heroes, that they may find strength and comfort in God’s unending love, and we know that our honored dead shall have peace and everlasting life in His eternal embrace.
I am not focusing per se on the V-22. I know how dangerous helicopters are, I was on plenty of Hueys, Cobras and OH-58’s. So maybe people like me are just more cognizant of its inherent flaws.
The V-22 cant even auto-rotate, and if one of those rotors enters ring vortex state the bird will flip over and auger in.
Prayers up!
RIP for the crew. I really hate to say this but for technology and advances to be made risks are taken and people die. Hopefully the risks are mitigated but they aren’t always. I personally wouldn’t want to fly anything that requires a computer to be involved with the flight controls. I am an aerospace engineer and a pilot so I know how lousy the software and hardware systems are made, and they are only getting worse.

LOts of aircraft = lots of accidents.
At the height of the Vietnam war (yes, it was) the Amry had losses of over $1.5 million *each day* in non-combat related accidents. THat is in 1967 dollars BTW.
V-22 has a unique ‘sound’ and does not broadcast it’s arival 20 min before it is on site. Shithooks and Hueys are heard looooong before they land.
I witnessed Marine 46 pilots’ skill on several occasions in Iraq. They would put a stunt-flying outfit to shame. More than once while watching them overhead I told myself it’ll never be seen in a movie because no one else could ever fly like that and the military would only do it for tactical ops in a war zone. Absolutely phenominal all-weather formation flying. One day when I’m old and retired I would like to do an oil painting of a formation of them lifting off out of a dust cloud at night in Babylon in 2004.
Sorry, Navy Habit!
I will forward your comments to my son. Thanks.
Do you have any idea how many Bell 47’s we could have bought with that $27B?!?
The concept doesn’t seem so complicated but in practice it has stability problems it seems.
I worked on G models and A model KC-135s were built in the 54-58 time frame when I was just 18!
Troubleshooting the avionics on these old birds separated the men from the boys.
