I grew up in Davenport and spent the first 35 years of my life there.
The Mayor and Council are basically good people, but they are scared to death of the civil rights commission. They know that anything they turn down will be met with charges of racism or bigotry. The commission has them by the short hairs, and they know it.
I wasn’t a bit surprised to see this happen. Until we get people brave enough to stand up in the face of bogus racism charges and do what’s right, this kind of stuff will continue to happen.
First response to the CRC, should have been “Please show me where in the Constitution it states a separation of Church and State, my understanding is that it would not create or establish a religion. These people really need to be smacked down when they bring this crap up.
What is the demographics of Davenport that they have their own civil rights commission? Why do they have one? What can this organization do to the town if they level charges of racism at it? Also, if race is the primary bugaboo, this becomes even more confusing. By race I presume you mean black people. Aren’t the majority of American blacks associated with the Christian faith, at least nominally? It makes no sense that a black watch dog group would be offended at the name of a holiday they observe. Are there other races in Davenport? Arabs? Curious to know.
Then, Christians and conservatives need to make them more scared of the fallout of this sort of discrimination.
