There is a mantra in the television business and it goes like this: Protect the brand. Look no further than NBC if you think this is not a wise statement.
And yet, you have to wonder what Discovery is doing in business with Sarah Palin. The well-respected umbrella company and main cable channel announced not long ago that it had won the bidding war for "Sarah Palin's Alaska," a reality series starring the polarizing politician. The various Discovery Channels - save for TLC, the one that Palin will actually appear on in her new reality show - are seen as the gold standard of brand awareness and likeability.
But we live in a viciously partisan country and Palin's presence in the Discovery family might not sit well with people who retch every time they see Palin's smiling mug. Imagine if you will, dear Republicans, Discovery announcing "Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco" and you'll better understand the issue.
This seems to be a dreadful if calculated mistake by Discovery. No doubt it tossed the show onto TLC because what used to be the Learning Channel (until they took all the learning out of it) has been home to the dreaded Gosselin clan of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," "Addicted," "19 Kids and Counting," "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," "Toddlers & Tiaras" and "Hoarding: Buried Alive," among many other soul-crushing series. It is no longer possible to protect that brand.
Ah, but Discovery Networks jumped at the chance to get in on the Palin sweepstakes because her presence will generate a ton of ink (mission accomplished) and possibly bring Palin lovers and haters to the table, increasing ad revenue and making a lot of money for the corporation.
But crawling in the same bed with politicians in our current partisan climate ...

Tim Goodman = another girly man afraid of little old Sarah. How cute! :)
still propogating the reality show con, I see...
I would think that Satan was too busy.
I would simply just not watch the Pelosi program. Maybe this would work for you too, Tim Goodman. But you've just got to have something to b*tch about, don't you?
Don't make me throw up.
Comparing Sarah Palin to Nancy Pelosi, the most hated woman in America, is simply silly. How many copies did Nancy Pelosi’s book sell? Did she even sell a half a million? And what ratings has Pelosi ever gotten on any TV show since she entered politics decades ago?
Idiotic article.
A true patriotic conservative like Sarah, is to the radical socialists, as a silver cross is to a vampire....
1) Palin is hot! Pelosi gives men a frightened turtle effect in their nether regions.
2) Who wants to see what goes on in a SF bathouse? No one wants to see how the fudge is packaged.
From the party of Jesse Shakedown Jackson, Li'Al Sharpstick, Obama of islam & Osama of Taliban fame! This from the genocidal party of infanticide
Ha,Ha,Ha,Ha

This opinion from losers who would have abbsolutely NO PROBLEM if Al Gore hosted a globull warming series on these same panels....
They can step off...
So he’s asking for a blacklist in the entertainment media?
How positively Communist.
Only a Communist would see Sarah Palin as “polarizing” while applauding the use of Howard Red Zinn’s revisionist history of Amerikkka as a teaching tool to young tools on cable.
Sarah Palin doesn’t care what these twits write, and neither do I.
Nancy sold WAY less than 5,000 coppies of her books.
If she had sold 50,000 it would have been described as a run away best seller. She is a loser like O’Bummer who sold way less than 500,000. coppies of his book.
You mean like Bill Moyers who became a multi-millionaire on PBS? I must have missed your articles bemoaning that, not to mentional all the Democrat-in-all-but-name programming over there.
Most would retch at Tim Goodman’s mug!
