Obamacare's Fans Misuse Corporate Study
Barron's ^ | April 5, 2010 | Jim McTague

OBAMACARE WILL NOT BEND DOWN THE RISING costs of medical treatment as dramatically as advertised; so its proponents in the White House and on Capitol Hill have decided to bend the truth instead. They are cynically misquoting a Business Roundtable report to argue that Obamacare will benefit corporate America.

...

On the heels of the headline-grabbing corporate write-downs [Congressman] Henry Waxman [...] issued an edict requiring several CEOs to appear before his panel to explain their actions. [H]e dismissed the dramatic earnings revisions as "assertions" and said that the write-downs conflict with independent analyses predicting significant savings for companies under the new law.

In particular, Waxman cited the November 2009 study commissioned by the Roundtable that predicted the health-care overhaul could reduce costs for businesses by more than $3,000 per employee over a 10-year period. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs subsequently cited the report in a news briefing. [...]

Here's the problem: There's zero correlation between that report and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act signed into law by the president on March 23. This comes not from me but from Kirk Monroe, spokesman for the Roundtable.

"They don't have anything to do with one another," says Monroe. "The study does not reference the bill." He adds, "This has taken on a life of its own."

The theme of the report, authored by Hewett Associates, was that the health-care status quo was unsustainable. It said that companies could end up spending $3,000 less per employee over 10 years if Congress adopted proper legislative reforms in concert with significant market changes that would give consumers an incentive to look for value when choosing services -- like expanded use of health reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts.

Another motto for this (mis)Administration: Never let a troublesome thing like the truth stand in the way.

Well, Obama and Waxman, I just got a nice letter from Corporate HR asking us to take our annual ASAP because they don't know how the NEW HR law will effect the company's bottom line.

I'm going to visit my Congress Critter and ask him what the hell did he do to me????
