A Belgian parliamentary committee has voted to ban face-covering Islamic veils from being worn in public.
The home affairs committee voted unanimously to endorse the move, which must be approved by parliament for it to become law.
Such a vote could be held within weeks, correspondents say, meaning that Belgium could become the first European country to implement a ban.
France is also considering restricting face-covering veils.
There are several types of headscarves and veils for Muslim women - those that cover the face being the niqab and the burka.
'Dangerous precedent'
The BBC's Dominic Hughes reports from Brussels that there are about 500,000 Muslims in Belgium, and the Belgian Muslim Council says only a couple of dozen wear full-face veils. Several districts of Belgium have already banned the burka in public places under old local laws originally designed to stop people masking their faces completely at carnival time.
The wording of the draft law approved by the parliamentary committee says the ban would apply to areas accessible to the public - which would include people walking in the street or using public transport - and would be enforced by fines or even prison.
Denis Ducarme, from the Belgian centre-right Reformist Movement that proposed the bill, said he was "proud that Belgium would be the first country in Europe which dares to legislate on this sensitive matter".
A colleague, Corinne De Parmentier, said: "We have to free women of this burden."
But the proposal has alarmed some who see it as an attack on civil liberties.
Isabelle Praile, the vice-president of the Muslim Executive of Belgium, said any law could set a dangerous precedent.
"Today it's the full-face veil, tomorrow the veil, the day after it will be Sikh turbans and then perhaps it will be mini-skirts,"

This from a very left-wing country (albeit with a large racist socialist voting proletarian population, themselves divided by language). Note that head coverings (which pre-date Islam, btw) are NOT banned.
Just rented the new release "Afghan Star" about the Afghanistan version of American Idol. It's a documentary I'd recommend to anyone who wants to see the effect of Islam on the lives of Afghan citizens. After watching it, you cannot help but feel blessed to have the freedoms that exist in America. We MUST protect them. Another excellent film is "The Stoning of Soroya M" based on a true story. May God help and protect the women in Islamic countries.

On one hand, I agree with this because I don’t want Islam to gain anymore strength than it already has.
On the other hand, the small “l” libertarian in me freaks out because once again, a government is trying to tell it’s citizens what to do on an issue that is none of their business.

I understand your point! But i think we have to face the reality. Something has to be done because our freedom loving society with all the benefits and individual rights for everyone was just not ready for this muslim invasion.
So it´s a matter of survival.

Until the incidence of crime goes away completely, one of the traditional duties of societies is to identify criminals, primarily by their facial features.
Head coverings, common in many religions, has never been a bar to that common sense expectation. As are turbans. Never been a problem, unless safety in specific occupations require it.
To throw miniskirts into the argument is not only disingenuous and absurd, it is too stupid to merit comment, other than to speculate as to whether any criminal has ever escaped capture due to the wearing of a miniskirt.
Having said that, I can't think of a better, more arrogant country to suffer from the fruits of their political correctness. May they suffer long and agonizinly, as stupidity deserves.

Novel idea....however I can’t recall the last time I read about a Suicide bomber in a mini-skirt.
Actually the Palestinians train young female suicide bombers to go scantily clad into Israeli nightspots to blow themselves up. (they’ve apparently found some loophole in the Koran that convinces the girls it’s OK)
Like the Iranians I met back in the days of the Shah when I was stationed in Texas.
We would find them at the bowling alleys on base, drunk, and harrasing the young female, American, Basic Trainees.
When we asked them how they were allowed they told us that their religion allowed them to violate its tenants when they were in non-Islamic countries and they could do whatever they wanted to other women since they were not of the Islamic faith and thus were not considered wothy of any decent treatment. They told us that any one not of Islam could was less than human.
And afterward, did you and your buddies invite them into the alley for a nice counseling session?
We were Basic trainees at the time and would have been instantly kicked out of the Air Force. Probably would have created and international incident as well.
We used our weekend "base passes," if we had them, to go to the four bowling alleys and would literally get between the Muslims and the female trainees, then tell the women to come sit with us so they could get away. We would also, en mass, walk the women back to their barracks for protection.
We once told off a group of Muzzies and they tried to start a fight. Since we did not want to end our short careers we left the bowling alley and they followed so we started running (there was four of us and about 15 of them). They ran with their arms and legs flapping around and we started laughing at them as we trotted away. It is no surprise that we can take their countries in an average of four days since they are a bunch of pansies who talk tough but could not now fight their way out of a wet paper bag.
