[Congressman] Scalise Urges Louisiana To Challenge New Health Care Law

1st District Congressman Steve Scalise says he hopes Louisiana's Attorney General will mount a legal challenge to the new federal health care law.

Scalise says he believes a requirement that all Americans purchase health insurance by 2014 or face a fine is unconstitutional.

During an appearance on the Castner and Carty Show Monday morning, Scalise says there is no precedent for the federal government mandating that every American must purchase a good or service to be a lawful resident of the country.

"In their bill they've got this individual mandate that says every American has to buy government approved health insurance and if you don't buy it the IRS is going to come and get you," Scalise said.

"I don't think the federal government has the power under Article 1, Section 8 in the commerce clause or anywhere else to mandate that every American has to buy government-approved health insurance," he added.

Scalise says there are "a lot" of constitutional scholars who have written extensively about it.

As a fellow Tulane alumnus I hope he’ll do the right thing and have La join the other states in the suit.

I like Steve Scalise. I usually don’t have to worry about how he is going to vote but I do let him know I am watching.
