WASHINGTON - House Democrats appeared to clinch the 216 votes necessary Sunday for passage of a landmark health care overhaul that promises to provide coverage to millions of uninsured Americans.
Passage of the legislation seemed assured when Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan announced that he will vote in favor of the health care overhaul, citing confidence that an executive order signed by the president will prevent federal funds from being used for abortion coverage.
"The real winner is the American people," Stupak said at a press conference to announce his intention to vote.
Stupak had led a block of anti-abortion Democrats who were concerned that the Senate's version of the health care legislation would allow recipients of federal subsidies for health care to receive abortion coverage.
"We are well past 216," he said, indicating that Democrats now have the votes to pass the bill on Sunday evening.

Stupak is a fool. Obama will not sign that EO.
I had a gut feeling about this. I think we’ve been strung along for weeks now. I feel totally betrayed. Stupak needs to go along with all of his comrades.

Yea, the fate of the republic lies in the hands of a few “pro-life” democrats. Anybody surprised that Stupak caved? Not me, anyone think this executive order is anything but cover for “pro-life” dumocrats? and has no bearing in the law?
Not if they legalize 20 million new voters before then.
I hope they will never have a good night sleep again because of the deal made with the devil.
You know this EO isn’t worth the paper it is written on because the pro-infanticide wing of the party would be bolting. I pray we can limit implementation in the courts until the next election.
Even if Obama writes an EO, it can be recinded by him later, and what about the Senate? Stupak has lost any integrity he ever had with the independents, and is NOW nothing more than another far left nutcase wanting his 15 minutes of fame.

Those who held out hope that they House would not pass this thing were delusional. Meanwhile, those who think that party affiliation means nothing are fooling themselves. The ONLY way to deal with this is to vote Democrats out of office.
