Reflection on Today's Events
Personal Reflection ^ | 3-21-10 | johniegrad

Posted on 03/21/2010 8:25:23 AM PDT by johniegrad

There is no underestimating the importance of today's events. I don't think anyone subscribing to this forum would refute that. Many people here wear their hearts on their sleeves and are rightfully distraught about the possibility that this monstrosity could be voted into law today. Reading through the threads, it is a very personal matter for all of us and we are all concerned about the future of our country, our children, and the world.

There is a higher degree of awareness here and it is productively channelled into fruitful activities. The passion of our fellow posters is palpable and sometimes takes a toll on them.

Given the importance of what is happening today, and, understanding that not all our posters welcome religious thoughts, I have posted a reading for simple reflection taken from today's Liturgy of the Hours. It is from Psalm 2.

It is not posted to deflect attention from the importance of what is occurring. Nor is it intended to stimulate theological debate. There is no attempt to predict the future or give up on the cause by posting it. It is simply here for anyone who might like to read it.

My only hope is that it may provide some comfort to those who are emotionally struggling with this marathon of evil that is occurring.

Why this tumult among nations,
among peoples this useless murmuring?
They arise, the kings of the earth,
princes plot against the Lord and his Anointed.
"Come, let us break their fetters,
come, let us cast off their yoke."

He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord is laughing them to scorn.
Then he will speak in his anger,
his rage will strike them with terror.
"It is I who have set up my king
on Zion, my holy mountain."

I will announce the decree of the Lord:

The Lord said to me: "You are my Son.
It is I who have begotten you this day.
Ask and I shall bequeath you the nations,
put the ends of the earth in your possession.
With a rod of iron you will break them,
shatter them like a potter's jar."

Now, O kings, understand,
take warning, rulers of the earth;
serve the Lord with awe
and trembling, pay him your homage
lest he be angry and you perish;
for suddenly his anger will blaze.

Blessed are they who put their trust in God.

Thank you for posting.

Now, rather than sit and squirm about the vote of which I have no control...I’m going to hit a few large buckets at the driving range and make believe the balls all have one of 3 names...

Reid...
Pelosi...
Obama...

I would prefer a summary of cheap ammo sources.

Praying never stopped a single fascist as far as I can tell.

Prayer never precludes action and often strengthens it.

Regardless of anyone's particular personal convictions, prayer is appropriate on this occasion.

For it will take a miracle for this monstrosity to be defeated.

In addition to this, I believe the North is about to wage a brutal and unholy war on a people who have done them no wrong, in violation of the Constitution and the fundamental principles of the government...We propose no invasion of the North, no attack on them, and only ask to be let alone.

The principle, on which the war was waged by the North, was simply this: That men may rightfully be compelled to submit to, and support, a government that they do not want; and that resistance, on their part, makes them traitors and criminals. No principle, that is possible to be named, can be more self-evidently false than this; or more self-evidently fatal to all political freedom. Yet it triumphed in the field, and is now assumed to be established. If it really be established, the number of slaves, instead of having been diminished by the war, has been greatly increased; for a man, thus subjected to a government that he does not want, is a slave. And there is no difference, in principle --- but only in degree --- between political and chattel slavery. The former, no less than the latter, denies a man's ownership of himself and the products of his labor; and asserts that other men may own him, and dispose of him and his property, for their uses, and at their pleasure.
          – Lysander Spooner
