Tom Hanks Angers Conservatives, Comparing 'The Pacific' in World War II to Iraq Hanks and Matt Damon's 'Green Zone' Under Fire From Conservatives for Stances on Iraq War By LUCHINA FISHER

March 17, 2010—

It's no surprise that some conservatives love to hate Hollywood.

Michael Moore and Sean Penn are perennial favorites. But Tom Hanks?

The star of such flag-waving films as "Saving Private Ryan" and "Apollo 13" and producer of the World War II miniseries "Band of Brothers" has come under fire recently for remarks he made while promoting his current project, "The Pacific."

In an interview with Time magazine, Hanks, who is producing the HBO miniseries, compared the World War II conflict in the Pacific with the current one in Iraq and Afghanistan. "The Pacific" began airing March 14.

"Back in World War II, we viewed the Japanese as 'yellow, slant-eyed dogs' that believed in different gods," Hanks told Time. "They were out to kill us because our way of living was different. We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different. Does that sound familiar, by any chance, to what's going on today?"

Richard Pearle, former secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan, told ABCNews.com that Hanks has got it wrong.

Gee, all this time I thought we went to war with Japan because of their attack on Pearl Harbor. Not because they were “different”.

After defeating them, we fed them and rebuilt their country. After defeating us in Bataan, they tortured and murdered our soldiers whom they captured.

Indeed, they were different from us.

Actors (and actresses) are like vases: They look pretty, they’re empty, and you can put whatever you want in them.

It’s stupid to ask them their opinions.

My money’s on Hanks announcing for public office soon. He’s already kissing up to the Big 0 with public announcement of adoration which resulted in a personal hobnob at our WH.

Comparing 'The Pacific' in World War II to Iraq

I think that's a bit of a misleading headline. He's really saying that WWII was a racist war on our part. A stupid thing to say.

Hollywood libs think they are smarter than anyone else because they can memorize and convincingly repeat lines written for them by others.

The only difference between Tom Hanks and a box of rocks is the box of rocks is smarter.

Hanks is an asshole.

If HE wants to see racism in WWII, he need look no further than the Japanese mindset and their Emperor worship. The Japanese were bigger racists than Hitler!

Hey Tommy-boy, go STUDY history BEFORE YOU start smearing brave men who DIED so your sorry ass could be born!!!

Hey, Tom—how does your “racist” analysis square with the fact that we were fighting Germans just as vigorously as we were fighting Japanese? I think that when they switched your brain with that of a youngster in “Big,” they forgot to switch it back.

When I buy a shirt or a steak I don't inquire into the party affiliation of the cashier or the owner. I'm making an exchange of money for a product. What they do with the money is their own responsibility. I have no more moral accountability for that than does a car salesman for selling a car to someone who later uses it as a getaway car in a bank robbery.

What a biased report from ABC of this liberal actor... Tom Hanks has offended all veterans past and present with his socialist ravings against America’s World War II effort.

I learned a new word the other day that describes Tom Hanks comments

presentism

the application of contemporary perspectives in explaining past events rather than placing these events in their historical context

Even among the other A-holes in Hollyweird, Tom Hanks is a stand-out.

After that comment, I refuse to see his latest production.

I wouldn’t be surprised if his companion in idiocy, Steven Spielberg, agrees him (the guy with the big personal collection of guns who supports gun control for us peasants.)
