Media Matters unloads on CNN hire (Erick Erickson)
Politico ^ | March 16, 2010 | Andy Barr

Posted on 03/16/2010 7:05:17 PM PDT by neverdem

The liberal media watchdog group Media Matters is fuming over CNN’s hiring of conservative RedState blogger Erick Erickson.

In a document provided POLITICO that Media Matters plans to post on its blog Tuesday, the group accuses Erickson of having a “long history of incendiary, sexist and racially charged statements.”

“If you need any further proof that the liberal media bias is a myth, CNN just hired someone who called David Souter a goat——ing child molester,” Media Matters Vice President of Research and Communication Ari Rabin-Havt told POLITICO.

The document includes many other profane Erickson statements, including the vulgar phrase highlighted about the former Supreme Court justice by Rabin-Havt.

The document cites 10 statements by the RedState founder that Media Matters says are guilty of invoking violence against progressives or are sexist or racist.

Among Erickson’s controversial comments is his assertion the Republican Scott Brown won the Massachusetts Senate race because the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) wanted to die a “martyr for the cause” of health care.

Additionally, the liberal group points out that Erickson defended Fox News host Glenn Beck’s calling President Barack Obama a “racist” and declared that first lady Michelle Obama was a “Marxist harpy wife.”

Noting the Nobel Peace Prize won by the president, Erickson wrote on RedState: “I did not realize the Nobel Peace Prize had an affirmative action quota.”

In a statement, CNN Political Director Sam Feist called Erickson a “perfect fit” for the network’s new show “John King USA” that debuts Monday.

“Not only is he an agenda-setter whose words are closely watched in Washington but as a person who still lives in small-town America, Erick is in touch with the very people John hopes to reach,” Feist said. “With Erick’s exceptional knowledge of politics as well as his role as a conservative opinion leader, he will add an important voice to CNN’s ideologically diverse group of political contributors.”

Erickson explained on RedState that CNN “made an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

“I’m very excited by the opportunity,” he wrote. “Thanks for the prayers and well wishes. This is the path God put me on, and it was totally unexpected, but I go where the good Lord leads.”

"CNN just hired someone who called David Souter a goat——ing child molester,” Media "

I don't believe I've ever seen a "goat-ing child molester". But, in absolute fairness to Erickson, I have to imagine that if I did, they'd look remarkably similar to David Souter.

It's an easy mistake for Erik to make.

FReepers: There are many layers of Romney dirty tricks here.
Like an onion. Thoughts?

"Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off
….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney.""

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"I’m told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palin’s people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
… aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.
Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off
….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

"Frum was indeed a critic of Palin, calling her nomination a "huge mistake" during an October 13 (2008, weeks before the election) Early Show appearance."

David Frum: "Two of our most plausible candidates for president in 2012 are leading Mormons: Mitt Romney and Utah governor Jon Huntsman."

David Frum: "I have a lot of regard for Mitt Romney as a man and politician… I will support him without qualm."

Kathleen Parker: "[I]t is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem." "Parker ... says something publicly that many of us have thought privately
but lacked the courage to say out loud - Palin should step down:"

"Kathleen Parker: After Interviews, Palin Should Bow Out"

Kathleen Parker: "Romney would bring more than squeaky clean qualifications
and youthful good looks to the ticket.
Romney would seem a logical choice."

"Parker: Romney raised bar on freedoms"
Kathleen Parker: "If Kennedy's speech was an important landmark in American political history,
Romney's was surpassing. With heartfelt humility and poetic eloquence,
he tracked the nation's struggle with and for freedom."

Staggering bigotry of Kathleen Parker - UPDATED"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

"President Barack Obama a “racist” and declared that first lady Michelle Obama was a “Marxist harpy wife"

You mean Barack "typical white person" Obama, and Michelle "for the first time in my life, I'm proud of my country" Obama.

I can't imagine why anyone would call one a racist, and the other "harpy". On second thought, perhaps I can think of a couple reasons.

Only 10 anti-progressive statements? Heck, Keith Olberman makes 20 vicious, incendiary anti-conservative attacks per night, and he is still anchor on MSNBC. The Soros funded "Media Maters” might have a word with MSNBC about that. Oh wait..

You don’t realize how you marginalize yourself. Yeah people will make birth jokes, but anyone carrying a chip on their shoulders about it is written off. I write you off. You don’t show very good judgment to ruin your own credibility by persisting with such fervor about a BC, which will never change anything. Eric had the good sense to draw a great big fat line in the sand to PROTECT his credibility.
I hope “offer he couldn’t refuse” means a ton of money.

Interesting. CNN is losing market share quicker than Obama is losing approval ratings. Perhaps CNN is trying to win back some Fox viewers with a few conservatives in their line up. Meida matters probably could care less about criticizing a specific conservative analyst. This is a warning shot over the bow of CNN.

Pass the popcorn please!

Truth should be an absolute defense in this situation.
