The politics of health care passage

Even as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scrambles for the 216 "yes" votes she needs to pass President Obama's health care reform bill, strategists on both sides of the partisan divide have begun to debate the political impact of what passage will mean.

All sides agree that the overall bill is not particularly popular at the moment. Republicans ascribe that unpopularity to the fact that people know what's in the bill and don't like or want it. Democrats see the current poll numbers as evidence that they have lost the message war in the run-up to passage but once the bill moves through Congress and people become more educated about the legislation, the more they will like it.

The Fix laid our hands on a new polling memo from Democratic survey guy John Anzalone that details the results of a health care poll conducted in a whopping 92 Democratic districts -- a mix of top Republican targets, moderate/conservative Blue Dogs and rural seats -- and funded by several labor groups. (The full list of districts that were polled is after the jump.)

The main points of the Anzalone memo:

* Nearly six in ten (59%) of voters in these districts support the idea of reforming the health care system and roughly that same number believe that the changes need to be made now.

* While 42% of voters in these districts initially support the health care bill that number jumps to 51 percent "after hearing about some of the benefits of the plan."

* The best message arguments for Democrats to make in the wake of passage are: 1) the coverage of pre-existing conditions and 2) the fact that for the first time ever average people will be able to have the same health care plan as Members of Congress.

I wonder if they tell "average people" what they will have to pay to "have the same health care plan as members of Congress." It wont be cheap. Besides, federal employees aren't the ones with Cadillac plans; those belong to corporate execs and some of the union workers.

Is this after 0bamao spins his pitiful yarns full of exaggerations, inconsistencies, hallucinations and lies? I suspect that the 51% number is about as believable as 0bamao's 3000% claim of premium reductions - he's all wee weed up!

Hoyer said CBO still working. Leaks suggesting preliminary CBO scores showed bill does not save enough.

Democrats figure they “lost the message war?” Yeah. That means they lost the war to keep the facts from the public!! Talk radio and the internet play HELL with the leftist agenda.

The article goes on:

“With the passage of the health care bill nearly secure, Democrats are now seeking the passage of another bill, which mandates that all Americans across the political spectrum drink poisoned Kool Aid.”

“Once again, a majority on the Left consider that, while the bill may not be popular initially, once the bill moves through Congress and people become more educated about the legislation, the more they will like it.”

“’With the economy in the toilet,’ said one congressman, ‘and with the passage imminent of a health bill guaranteed to flush the economy - and the nation - down forever, we are now able to insure that all Americans will accept our occasionally unpopular measures. Let us, then, as a nation and as a people, all drink the Kool Aid, after which no one will care about anything.’”

“The measure has gained enormous support among the nation’s Democrats, and it is likely that the Universal Kool Aid Bill will be mandated for all citizens before summer. President Obama has, of course, sworn to sign the new bill when it reaches his desk.”

This assumes the damn thing is gonna pass...part of a propaganda wave designed to demoralize us.

They were SUPPOSED to pass this in June or August, right?

Neil Cavuto said Rush gave out the numbers for congress to his listeners and now the phone lines are overloaded.
The numbers are also listed on Rush’s page.

Here is one of the ones he gave out on the radio that I’m calling. So far it’s been busy but I’m going to burn it up till I get to tell my congress critter to vote NO!
