Gibbs: By next Sunday, healthcare reform will be 'law of the land' By Walter Alarkon - 03/14/10 09:59 AM ET

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the healthcare bill will pass by next weekend.

"We'll have the votes when the House votes, I think, within the next week," Gibbs said on "Fox News Sunday."

Gibbs added that those on next week's Sunday talk shows "will be talking about healthcare not as a presidential proposal but I think as the law of the land."

President Barack Obama will look to campaign on the new healthcare law in midterm elections, Gibbs said.

"We believe healthcare reform is going to pass, and once it passes we're happy to have the 2010 elections be about the achievement of healthcare reform," Gibbs said.

But Republicans on Fox said there's no guarantee the bill passes and that Democrats will benefit from it.

"If they pass this thing, I think they lose the House of Representatives this fall," said former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove.

If Democrats do pass it, "then the American people will be the losers," said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.).

"This is a trillion-dollar-bill attempting to overhaul healthcare for every single American," Cantor added.

The bill in its first 10 years will cost nearly $900 billion.

Cantor also criticized Democrats for talking about "bending the rules" by holding a single House vote that allows passage of both the bill passed by the Senate and a package of fixes. That move, under consideration by House Democratic leaders, would keep House members from voting on unpopular parts of the Senate bill, namely special deals that were included to win over recalcitrant senators.

"There should be in the minds of most Americans a direct vote on the Senate bill," Cantor said.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), a member of House Democratic leadership, dismissed suggestions the House will pass the Senate bill without a vote, but he left open the possibility of packaging the fixes with the underlying bill.

"We're going to have an up or down vote," he said.

The House should not be allowed to vote on anything except the exact Senate bill. Otherwise, they are considering a new and different bill which the Senate then must approve (and stop debate on before any vote).

This is not rocket science and Americans understand it is a different bill if it is not the identical Senate bill.

Pass or fail we're looking forward to your party campaigning about your healthcare efforts as well Gibby! ;-)

He’s a cute fellow and he’s also brilliant.

His cohorts in congress and the White HOuse are also brilliant and cute, along with those brilliant, really-really smart congress people from both coasts, especially New York.

They’re all just a bunch of cuddly and cute people who are going to change the world and take care of everyone and make the birds sing and make the sun shine and make the earth live again.

They’re all so cute and wonderful it’s very difficult for one to contain oneself at the sight of them.

/s/

IMHO

Thank You, Bart Stupak [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

I got an e-mail from a conservative publication this morning that declared in its subject line: "Stupak may betray Pro-Lifers at last minute? Tell him 'hold firm!'"

Bart Stupak has been holding firm for a heck of a long time. Yes, I hope he continues to. But let's just thank and encourage him — and do what we can to influence other members who haven't demonstrated the same kind of courage he has. The b-word strikes me as not only wholly unnecessary but deeply insulting. Also, extraordinarily ungrateful.

If you happen to be reading this Congressman Stupak (though I doubt The Corner is somewhere he hangs out): Thank you, Bark Stupak. I think you've inspired a number of people these past few months. I pray some of them are pro-life Democrat members of Congress!

You were saying ...

What bill? WHat freakin bill are they talking about? I truly despise this administration. Hate him, them !!!!

Ummmm..., it's the Congress that has to vote on the bill, not the Administration, although the Administration is definitely pushing it.

But, the fact of the matter is -- if it passes, it's the House that is doing it. And the House is comprised of Representatives from a whole lot of smaller segments of our own states, that each of us live in. They're our own representatives who are doing this.

I would say, overall, that it's the make-up of the voting population of this country which is "doing this" more than anything else. It's like another FReeper post which was pointing out about Obama -- that it's not Obama that is the problem, it's the voters who put him there that is the problem. And if you get rid of Obama, you've still got those very same voters who will be voting in the next election, too...

The real problem here, in this country is not our representatives or the Administration -- the real problem is the voting public.

I would direct that "despising" to your neighbors that you see around you...

VERY, VERY GOOD - thanks for the smile in an otherwise disturbing interview with Gibbs.

I hate them too, I am but a small drop in the bucket, but if you get enough drops, you can get an ocean and that is what I am hoping and praying for daily.
