Jamie's warning to Sydney parents
The Daily Telegraph ^ | March 14, 2010 | Claire Harvey

Posted on 03/13/2010 7:07:46 PM PST by myknowledge

CELEBRITY chef Jamie Oliver has served up a stark warning to Australians: teach children to cook, or the nation faces a "f****ing scary" future of obesity and early death.

Oliver says we are too complacent about Australia's advantages as a natural food bowl and are raising a generation of teenagers "who have never learnt to cook a f***ing thing".

The English kitchen maestro will hit Sydney today to announce his recipe for a healthier future, his Ministry of Food cooking-school concept offering free cooking classes to adults and children who must promise to "pass on" the recipes they learn to at least two more people.

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has something correct to say about increasingly overweight and obese kids: Either lack of cooking skills or simple laziness.

5. Add the sugar and evaporated milk. Bring to boil and stir constantly for 5 minutes.

It’s much better for someone like him to promote healthy eating than the government getting involved and forcing us to eat healthy.

He is SO right about this. Not only in the US but across much of the western world.

Go to a grocery store and look at what people are buying. Boxed/canned/frozen JUNK filled with preservatives, fats, sugars, salts, chemicals, additives and Lord knows what else. Then there are the bags of chips and cookies, sugar packed sodas, sugar filled deserts, etc, etc. Honestly it is disgusting.

I love to cook and am blessed with the time and God given talent to be a very good cook. Yes, I admit I brag about my abilities in the kitchen - but then ask anyone whose been to my house for dinner!!!

People need to learn to cook, not open a can or toss some packaged junk in the microwave or oven. Not only will their health be better, it’s WAY cheaper. Plus, home-cooking allows people to tailor foods to their individual needs, tastes and bodies.

Take a look at packaged foods made for certain diseases. Diabetic food tend to be filled with fats and salts to make up for the lack of sugar and carbs. Low fat food tend to be sugar filled and/or high carb. Low salt foods tend to add additional chemicals. There are some exceptions but they are few and far between.

Learning the basic skills of cooking and baking has allowed me to advance to more difficult foods and techniques not to mention dozens upon dozens of cuisines I can make at the drop of a hat. It has also opened up a world where we literally could go for years and never eat the same meal twice.

Here’s to hoping people listen to Jamie and take his advice.

.</soapbox>

That’s right, we don’t need a nanny state.

He gets excited over his garden in the country (show on Food network) and excited and joyful growing, harvesting and cooking wonderful vegetables and fruits along with grilling meats. It is fun to watch him enjoy great varities of foods and loving cooking and eating them.

There’s a reason why dads should bring home the bacon and moms should serve it up.

Well I don’t care for the language but even in the good old USA, it is true. I have said it for years. I taught my son, and good thing I did, because he had to for years and he even taught his girlfriends. Very of few of them had a clue.

He’s right about the cooking but I’ll add something that parents should do, something that his parents obviously did not do.

And that would be to knock little potty mouths on their butts the first time & every time they foul the air w/ expletives.

Most people develop our eating habits from our parents, especially our mothers.

Home cooking isn’t the panacea for all our obesity problems, but it would go a long way in helping - as your mom showed.

I’ll bet Jamie has a high BMI in 20 years.

I wonder what his advice will be then.

He’s doing a great thing.

All he’s saying is lets teach people to be able to cook for themselves and eat decently. If people want to eat less healthy things ok but at least they are offered the ability to cook and choose for themselves.

Many people don’t even know what to do with veggies
