The Fight For and Against Dissolution (Propsition to Dissolve The Villiage of Brockport, NY)

The village of Brockport is facing serious financial challenges. That part isn't up for debate, but what should be done about it?

Some say the village's elected leaders have run the village into the ground and getting rid of the government altogether is the only answer.

Others say dissolution will create more problems than it will solve.

It is home to the Erie Canal, a state university and nearly 200 years of history. A newly formed group of citizens says it is trying to save Brockport.

"There is no pot of gold at the end of the dissolution rainbow," said Jo Matela, former Brockport mayor.

The village provides essential services like water, street maintenance, and public safety. Some say dissolving the village amounts to nothing more than trading one tax collector for another.

"Instead of getting the bill from the village of Brockport, you'll be getting it from the town. They will in essence become your landlord," Matela explained.

So what happens to the village museum, fire trucks, police cars and other assets?

"Do these things need to be sold at auction to the highest bidder? Is that what's going to happen? Because according to the law, that's how it's spelled out," said Carrie Maziarz,

Dan Kuhn of the Brockport Tax Cutters said it sounds like a strong case until you consider who's making it.
