Washington -- Senators have reached an agreement on more modest dietary supplement safeguards that would make it easier to crackdown on products that could hurt people.
The move comes only a few days after Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz, stepped away from a tougher bill because of the concerns expressed by Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is a major supporter of the dietary supplement industry, one of Utah's biggest sectors.
McCain and his co-sponsor Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., announced the agreement in a letter sent to Hatch, R-Utah, and two other supplement supporters, Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo.
The letter, released Wednesday evening, outlines four areas of "common ground" the senators plan to fold into a larger bipartisan food safety bill.
The five senators agree to:
"We feel strongly that these additional safeguards are necessary to protect those who take dietary supplements and will provide them with the information necessary to make more educated decisions regarding their health," McCain and Dorgan wrote in the letter.

How sweeping is this? We all know how arbitrary the FDA can be, just look at what they did with Vitamin B6, a natural substance. I don't trust this agency any farther than you can throw them.
I agree with John McCain and others on this issue.
I see too many supplements being pushed with promises.
You don’t know what’s in them and if you’re getting what they claim is in them.
My doctors agree with me.
Sure, there are great supplements, but not all of them are.
I’m so glad these people are saving me from myself. /sarc
Juan McCain is a Democrat and liar.
You do your own research and you get what you pay for! Why do you want the gov’t to do this for you?
Because we can’t.
A purchaser cannot possibly be sure what’s in each supplement.
It’s that simple.
Hatch, who is a major supporter of the dietary supplement industry, one of Utah’s biggest sectors.
Hatch who is a major supporter of the dietary supplement industry because they give him tons of campaign dollars.-—There. Fixed it.
Rome is burning, and these yokels are worrying about diet supplements? UFB.
>> McCain: A persons health is being left in his own uninformed hands instead of being overseen by those trained in the field. Government has an obligation to save such a person from his own folly. <<
Sorry, I must respectfully disagree with you and him.
My doctors agree with me.
They want to spend office time having to see patients who are not in need of their medical services in order to issue prescriptions for vitamins and minerals??
No. My doctors agree with me for safety and honesty reasons.
My doctor has recommended supplements for me and my husband.
Medicine is checked by the FDA.
Supplements should be as well.
That IS our government’s job.
Can you honestly tell me that you know for sure what is in each supplement?
Of course, you can’t.
The government requires ingredient labels on everything, my bottles of Vitamin C include the the components used to make the tablets, same with the B's, etc. This whole deal came about because some athletes did not wish to deal with the consequences of their actions and lied about steroid use, "We thought we were just getting nutritional supplement." Sure -- because everyone knows your head increases in size in adulthood just by swallowing some vitamins.
It was an attempt at more government control -- I'm glad you were defeated in part, at any rate.
Well I can. I guess it’s that ‘conservative’ in me that can get things done.
Keep dreaming.
You can’t possibly know for sure what is in each supplement.
GOP_Lady,
If I own my body, than I get to choose what goes in it. We call doctor recommendations, recommendations for a reason. Otherwise it would be a decree. I can go out to the back yard and eat all kinds of bad stuff. I could drink some “tasty” anti-freeze. Please stop trying to save people from themselves. You can’t save people. Only god or the great spaghetti monster that lives behind the sun can. You’re part of the problem.
Your dream is to be like me - resourceful, independent!
I’m not trying to save people.
All I want is to know for sure that what they say are in dietary supplements are in there.
We do it for medicine, and we should do it for dietary supplements.
NOONE can know for sure what they’re getting in these dietary supplements.
