The Truth Behind Sarah Palin's Canadian Health Care
Esquire ^ | 3/10/10 | Luke Dittrich

Posted on 03/10/2010 11:50:35 AM PST by Lou Budvis

This weekend, while giving a speech in Calgary, Sarah Palin mentioned that when she was a child, growing up in the small town of Skagway, Alaska, her family sometimes sought out medical care in the nearest city, Whitehorse. This anecdote wouldn't have generated any attention — eleven thousand comments and counting on the Huffington Post — were it not for the fact that Whitehorse lies across the border from Alaska, in Canada. Bloggers pounced, declaring her a hypocrite for once taking advantage of the sort of nationalized health care system she now decries.

As someone who both lives in Whitehorse and has spent time with the Palin family, I'd like to take this opportunity to do something I've never felt moved to do before: defend Sarah Palin

If you ever visited Skagway, you'd know this was a non-story. You cannot travel by land to AK from Skagway. The Palins would've had to gone by boat or small plane to Juneau. The only railway in town leads to Whitehorse.

Also, Canada didn’t completely socialize Healthcare until 1984.
The hospital that she visited back in the 60’s was not socialized.

It was an internet meme. The Left has plied this tactic plenty of times. Even the Tom DeLay “ethics investigation” was a partisan smear (the case has still not been brought to trial and Ronnie Earle has left the prosecution to seek a failed run for the Democrat nomination for Lt. Governor of Texas).

They know that it’s a losing battle to try to get everyone to hear the “update”. The initial smear will remain in their minds.

Sarah Palin’s family never paid Canadian income taxes.

If foreigners coming to your country to partake of your medical care (free no less) was argument to “adopt that system”, then the US medical system should stay as it is.

Since when did a silly thing like facts get in the way of the ‘progressives’ feeding frenzy?
“Facts? We don’t need no stinkin’ facts!”, said the progressive.

That is the correct motorcycle. Canadian healthcare was not socialized when Sarah Palin used it.

Lefties aren’t very good with dates. When I told one that Bush attended both Yale and Harvard he said “well yeah, when your daddy is President it’s easy to get into schools like that.” Nevermind that when W. attended in the sixties his daddy was nothing more than a mid-level apparatchic.

"The Left has plied this tactic plenty of times"

I have little sympathy. Could it be that it works plenty of times? Make it not worth their while. Just because the libs have lots of lawyers doesn't mean that this tactic should be painless for them.

Lefties aren’t very good with dates.

Or history. A better comeback would be that President Bush's grandfather was a Senator.

“Bloggers pounced, declaring her a hypocrite for once taking advantage of the sort of nationalized health care system she now decries.”

It’s a nonstory for a variety of reasons. Kids don’t get to vote on where they go for medical, and they aren’t competent to declare it’s quality, either.

Because of the feds, the only road out of Skagway is into Canada... STILL to this day...
Because of the feds, its hard to build any roads in most of Alaska..

You know, since the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OWNS most of Alaska..

Those hollering hypocrite not only DO NOT KNOW what a hypocrite is, they are hypocrites themselves.

First, if Sarah Palin was a child and her parents took her, she had no choice in the matter and her adult opinions are not thereby rendered hypocritical.

Second, suppose that she HAD freely chosen to go, but later, with a more mature wisdom, rejected socialized medicine as bad for the country. This still does not make her a hypocrite. People can grow, gain in knowledge and judgment, and change their minds.

Third, and some may think this is problematic. She could be against it, and say she lived in Canada, where she paid taxed to support it. Then when needed she could use it, especially if other options were shut off. None of this would make her a hypocrite.

Hypocrisy is pretending to be something that you are not, but it not taking advantage of services that you are entitled to by law and have paid for. Although, as an American citizen, I doubt here parents paid those taxes, and I don't know if they paid the hospital. But still, that's them, not the child Sarah.

people who live in these remote frontier towns along the US-Canada border do not allow it to get in the way of offering mutual aid for survival.

Actually libs do frequently use facts. They state quite clearly that something is a fact and then draw false conclusions. This is important to remember, because libs have the ability to manipulate those who do not pay close attension to what is going on in the world around them by using this technique. Does global warming ring bell?
