A suspect has been arrested in the 2001 rape and murder of Gladys Conrad, 84, Carlsbad police said Wednesday.
Mexican national Alejandro Avalos Fernandez, 33, was extradited to the United States from Mexico on Tuesday and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of murder, rape, sodomy, torture, and assault.
He is being held without bail ...
San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, along with Carlsbad Police Department Chief Tom Zoll and Investigations Lt. Kelly Cain, are expected to release details about the case at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Police Department's Conference Center, 2560 Orion Way.
Fernandez, a man Mexican authorities arrested in a "crime-ridden" area of Mexico City on Jan. 23, 2009, a U.S. marshal's spokesman said last year. Last March, authorities said they were awaiting Fernandez's extradition.
A neighbor found Conrad, a retired psychiatrist, raped and strangled on the morning of Sept. 1, 2001, in her home at Carlsbad by the Sea retirement community, said Conrad's daughters, Lily Conrad Siegel of Colorado and Natalie Conrad Goishi of Northern California, in 2006.
Police found no sign of forced entry in Conrad's apartment when she was discovered dead.
Siegel and Goishi said their mother's severe arthritis made it difficult for her to open and close windows and doors in her apartment, so she would sometimes leave the back door ajar.
Police had no leads in the Carlsbad case until April 2004, when a national DNA database showed that a sample of the suspect's DNA matched DNA for an unsolved Los Angeles attempted-rape case in which the 64-year-old female victim escaped her attacker.
The suspect remained unidentified for four years, until a DNA check conducted after Fernandez was arrested on a narcotics charge in Los Angeles allegedly linked him Conrad's rape and murder.

5 arrested in alleged Pa. drug, prostitution ring
[snip]NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Five Mexican nationals are under arrest in suburban Philadelphia after authorities broke up what they describe as an international drug and prostitution trafficking ring.
Montgomery County District Attorney Risa (REE'-sah) Ferman says two defendants would routinely travel to New York to pick up women and bring them to brothels in Norristown.
Ferman says the women could not leave until they had worked a week in the brothels. She says the women were brought to the U.S. with promises of a better life, not realizing they would become sex slaves.
Authorities say the operation was part of larger network of drug and prostitution houses across the country.
Police also confiscated cocaine, nearly $30,000 in cash, fraudulent IDs and several cars. http://www.wfmj.com/Global/story.asp?S=12085967

The newspaper reported that Ruiz was arrested in Panama on Thursday.
Ruiz had been living in McAllen where she reportedly took a flight to Houston and then to Panama where she had planned to attend a party.

_______________________- Ramon Ayala's first concert since Mexico arrest
Mar. 7, 2010
Ramon Ayala had few words but let his music do the talking at his first public performance since being arrested in Mexico in December.
Ayala took the stage at Hidalgo's BorderFest with an accordion painted to look like the Mexican flag around 11 p.m. Saturday.
But the Norteño legend didn't speak to his audience during the 45-minute performance.
Instead, Ayala went from song to song in a performance that included favorites such as "Mi Piquito de Oro", "Tragos Amargos" and "Ya No Llores".
Thousands of cheering fans did seem to mind the drizzle coming down as they enthusiastially sang along during the outdoor concert.
Ayala took time to pose for pictures with fans and sign autographs but made no public statements about his recent arrest or any other topic.
The Hidalgo-based musician and members of the groups Los Cadetes de Linares and Grupo Torrente were arrested by Mexican authorities in December.
They were also playing at a Christmas party for the Beltran-Leyva drug cartel in Morelos when a battle with authorities broke out.
Ayala was released for health reasons while the others remained in custody as part of an ongoing investigation.
The three have been charged with drug trafficking and weapons charges along with 11 alleged members of the Beltran-Leyva Cartel[snips] http://www.valleycentral.com/news/story.aspx?id=426264 ________________
Northern Mexico cops protest after ambush kills 3
(AP) 19 hours ago
MONTERREY, Mexico Police in northern Mexico protested Saturday hours after three of their colleagues were shot to death in an ambush and a fourth was wounded.
Local police in the city of San Nicolas de los Garza, a suburb of the industrial hub of Monterrey, gathered outside police stations and shouted demands at their superiors. Police want better weapons, equipment and life insurance.
"We want our rifles back," said one masked officer, who would not be identified for fear of reprisals. He also said one of the officers killed in the shootout lacked a bulletproof vest, which some officers have gotten.
City spokesman Alberto Davalos said officers had agreed to continue working "under protest" while their demands are being met.
Video from the scene of the ambush showed the officers' patrol car riddled with bullets. The injured officer is in serious but stable condition.
State police said the killings were apparently carried out by a drug gang.[snip] http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gMi5B2USfJStXxfqgWWr2xjRYpOgD9E9DMHG0

__________________ Document mill discovered in Wisconsin, illegal aliens arrested
A few days ago, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mexican nationals Julio Hernandez-Navarette, 34; Daniel Santiago-Garcia, 29; and Fany Santiago-Garcia, 26, in a Milwaukee suburb. All of them were charged with for conspiring to manufacture and sell fraudulent immigration and identity documents. Additionally, Fany Santiago-Garcia and Daniel Santiago-Garcia, were charged for unlawful possession of firearms by illegal aliens, a felony.
The arrests were the culmination of an investigation which began in April 2009, after ICE agents arrested an Italian national, in the country illegally who was in possession of fake identification documents. The subject admitted to purchasing the phony ID from the Mexican nationals. The three were operating out of two houses in West Allis, WI.[snip] http://www.examiner.com/x-35821-Immigration-Reform-Examiner~y2010m3d6-Document-mill-discovered-in-Wisconsin-illegal-aliens-arrested http://www.examiner.com/x-35821-Immigration-Reform-Examiner~y2010m3d6-Document-mill-discovered-in-Wisconsin-illegal-aliens-arrested
Lemme guess, Death Penalty had to be waived in order for extridition.
huh?
Not guilty for sure.
Didn’t you read the above article where it states that Gloria Trevi’s mother was arrested? G.T. is a big singing sensation in Mexico,”Supreme Diva of the Mexican Pop”.Her songs are aimed at thrashing hypocrites, lashing out at upper class, exposing issues of hunger, prostitution, forced abortion, physical abuse, hiv, religion, war and overdose deaths, issues few in Mexico want to confront. She has always sung in her songs that she stubbornly holds to the truth and exposing it at whatever the cost. Thus she made powerful enemies, including the Mexican government and drug cartels. Now her own mother has been arrested.
She bedazzles her clothing so that her fans don’t have to.
The amnesty charge has started in the white house and congress.

90 Day Solution Without Confusion
Terry Anderson — May 20, 2007
The debate over the illegal alien invasion has already happened. The American people have stated loud and clear that they want all illegal aliens deported and not rewarded. Those who do not want illegal aliens deported, including some elected politicians, racist separatist hate groups (MALDEF, LULAC, MEChA the National Council of the Race, etc.), the media and elitists like Bill O’Reilly continually tell us that we can’t “ROUND UP” twenty million people. The term “round up” is inflammatory and is used to make us seem barbaric or less than human and discourage us from doing what must be done to save America. The truth of the matter is, we don’t have to “round up” anybody. What we have to do is make existence in this country extremely hostile to those here illegally and guess what? They will leave! Make it where they can’t buy or sell, can’t rent, can’t drive, can’t work, can’t medicate, educate or incarcerate! Do these things and THEY WILL LEAVE!!! Having said that, I offer, to MY country, a humble plan to rid us of this huge burden. This plan is based on common sense, THE LAW and a will to do it. It goes like this:
Congress shall declare a 90 day amnesty for ALL illegal aliens. During that period NO status adjustments will be made. Zero! For 90 days illegal aliens will have the opportunity to dispose of any accumulated assets, both real and personal. Bought a house? Sell it! Bought a car? Sell it! Got a dog, give it away! They will have three months to settle their affairs and sever all ties to this country. At the end of the amnesty period, on day 91, ANY illegal alien still here will be considered a federal, felony fugitive and will be arrested and jailed. One year the first time. FIVE years the second time and TEN years the third time. We will build a tent prison in the California / Arizona desert and expand it as needed. Once jailed, all assets will be seized and sold at auction. All proceeds will be used to incarcerate said illegal aliens. These stipulations will apply to anyone who entered the country illegally OR any Visa overstay of one day or more.
ANY ILLEGAL ALIEN CAUGHT IN THE UNITED STATES AFTER THE AMNESTY PERIOD HAS EXPIRED WILL BE BANNED FROM THE COUNTRY FOR LIFE!
On day 91, ANY employer who hires an illegal alien fugitive will be jailed. One year for the first offense, FIVE years for the second and TEN years for the third. These laws and penalties will also apply to any bank lending money to illegal aliens and anyone giving them aid and shelter, including churches.
American born children of illegal aliens will be placed in jeopardy by the actions of their parents. Since the American people had no hand in those actions, the responsibility for the care of those children will be that of their parents. If they self-deport, they have the option to take the kids with them or leave them here with an adult of their choice. If the parent is incarcerated as an illegal alien fugitive, they have the option of placing the children with an adult of their choice or making them wards of the federal government and placed in an institution until their release.
These measures are hard but they are fair and are needed to assure the survival of this once great country. They apply to anyone in the country illegally regardless of race, creed, color, height, weight, age, sex, or national origin.
