WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gallup Daily tracking finds that 19.8% of the U.S. workforce was underemployed in February, on par with January's 19.9% reading.
These results are based on February interviews with more than 19,000 adults in the U.S. workforce, aged 18 and older. Gallup classifies respondents as "employed" if they are employed full time or are employed part time but do not want to work full time. Gallup classifies respondents as "underemployed" if they are employed part time but want to work full time or are unemployed. Unemployed respondents are not employed, looking for work, and available for work. February's 19.8% underemployed estimate includes 10.6% who are unemployed and 9.2% who are working part time but wanting full-time employment (neither estimate is seasonally adjusted, and both are based on adults 18 and older). Both figures are similar to January's estimates.
Although Gallup's data trend closely with figures put out by the U.S. government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are important methodological differences between how Gallup calculates and how the government calculates its estimates. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the U.S. workforce aged 16 and older. Gallup data are not seasonally adjusted and are based on respondents aged 18 and older.
No Burst of Hope, or Loss of Hope
Hope for finding a job remained flat in February: 40% of the underemployed were hopeful that they would find a job in the next four weeks, compared to 39% in January. Gallup asks the unemployed whether they think they will have a job in the next four weeks, and asks those who are employed part time but want to work full time whether they think they will have a job in the next four weeks that requires them to work 30 hours/week.

Hope among both the unemployed (47%) and part-timers wanting to work full time (32%) remained unchanged from January to February.
The stimulus is working! /S
Excellent news for Obama and crew.
Particularly that people are losing hope at finding work.
So with all these people on the dole, how do you think they’ll vote?
I fear that Obama may have succeeded in cementing a permanent socialist political majority in the US.
nobama’s plan to transform America to a socialist/marxist state by redistributing wealth IS working. what a GREAT President. /Mega-S
I hope Jimmy Carter hasn’t gotten too attached to his title of “Worst President Ever”....it looks as if he’s been dethroned!
Don't get me wrong -- don't approve of Carter (or almost all Presidents, for that matter). CONGRESS is the ultimate problem in this nation aside from the people being Godless. The Congress represents the people and represents them well. WE have to clean up our individual acts, then we will put the proper people into office to make the right decisions. All that aside, most of the problems in this nation have been created by Congress and the people behind the scenes who control Congress critters.
Thank you!
Seems most people forget their civics lesson:
The President Proposes
The Congress Disposes.
The problems we are having today is merely a reflection of our society.
What did you expect when the electorate put ‘progressives’ in charge?
The 19.8% number will not be reported to the masses.
Pretty much mirrors the statements last night by George Will while speaking at Randolph Macon College.
It is hard to paint a pretty picture unless you throw in a story about baseball and Earl Weaver.
I doubt this would be any benefit for Obama. I sure as hell would not settle for a government hadout when I could be make 5 times more working. I would bet u that a lot of people are pissed that they can’t make their unemployment check stretch far enough to pay their bills.
I think the rate that was reported today is B.S. I do not know one person that got a job last month. I bet the government is cooking the books.
This is the inevitable end game to our obsession with shipping our industry over seas. The myth that consumers ability to go into debt to buy cheaper crap from China is prosperity and beneficial to our country is now being exposed. No industry = no jobs = no economy, no matter how much the globalist free traders want to chant about the joys of their beloved system.
The ecosystem of our “real” economy vs. the imaginary debt driven economy will take decades to rebuild.
It's official. We are SO Depressed.
I could ask the two that moved in with me.
