Like most random nuts (including the man who attacked the IRS office) he had libertarian/anarchist tendencies. There is very little difference between the two, and oddly enough, people like that, while theoretically being anti-government, actually resent the government only because they feel it doesn’t do enough for them or support their project (something generally involving drugs - Bedell was a big pot advocate).
Anarchists were often used by Communists as the shock troops in destabilizing a country to permit a Communist government takeover. Prior to the Spanish Civil War, bombings and assassinations committed by anarchists, usually against conservative or government figures, had destabilized the country and undermined the political process.
Of course, when the Communists took over, they hauled the anarchists out and shot them, because they regarded them as useful for the preliminary stage but too crazy and unreliable to be trusted in the construction of the dictatorship of the proletariat...

I think your comment, specifically, about “Anarchists” and how they were/are used by the Communists is very insightful.
The same, in parts, can be said about the Islamists’ approach in Iran around 1979 & even now (who use a different primary vehicle e.g. religion).
