To my knowledge, Demint was his lone, vocal supporter.

I guess the rest of the GOP had their skirts blow over their heads.

“As of this writing, he has single-handedly fought the borrow-and-spend Senate to standstill.”

####

Anyone else find the descriptor “single-handedly” consummately depressing?

"Republican Sen. Jim Bunning of Kentucky, a 78-year-old grandfather of 40...

Grandfather of 40. How many kids did he have?

Yep. If the rest of Senate Republicans were willing to follow Bunning’s lead, they could shut down the Senate for 40 consecutive weeks. Even if they merely delayed all the legislative damage that might otherwise be done during that period, the benefits of even this temporary respite from big government likely would measured in hundreds of billions of additional GDP.

U.S. NATIONAL DEBT CLOCK

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 03 Mar 2010 at 01:24:36 AM GMT is:

$ 1 2 , 5 1 2 , 0 5 3 , 0 2 5 , 7 3 8 . 3 1

The estimated population of the United States is 307,937,015
so each citizen's share of this debt is $40,631.86.

The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$3.96 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
Concerned? Then tell Congress and the White House!

Bunning caved in the end and ALL the Repubs voted for the bill. Indeed, what a historic and heroic stand.....=.=

The way in which the media handled this story was a classic example of either: (1) complete ignorance of the Senator’s motivations, or (2) willful obfuscation of the facts.

Either way I think he got a raw deal for trying to do the right thing. By the Republicans as well as the Democrats.

Good point. I don’t think people realize the sheer magnitude of the debt our nation is saddled with, and its ongoing danger.

Remind me again why we should be excited about a potential “Republican” takeover of Congress this year.

Yes, this is why the prospect of the Republicans taking back Congress doesn't excite me that much. Yes, it would at least put the brakes on Obama's agenda, in theory. But in the end, they haven't learned anything from the past few years.

Wouldn’t it be less costly to just develop a device that grabs our ankles, tips us upside down and shakes all the money from our pockets?

Hell, I already feel like I have to grab my ankles now.

He probably figured, why the hell should I get killed for. If they are too stupid to see what is happening, hell with them.

What he did was cast his pearls before the swine and they turned on him and rendered him.

Actually Bunning did not cave. He was only holding up passge by unanimous consent- demanding a vote on the measure. He got the vote so now we have Demcrats on record being hypocritical

The Democrats support Pay-Go unless they want to spend money on something really important...they just happen to think everything they want is really important!

During the Bush years, supporting “Pay-Go” way an easy way for Democrats to try to prevent tax cuts while making it look like they were fiscally responsible.

We need a constitutional amendment with firm budget caps. Otherwise any kind of spending restraint Congress puts on itself will be immediately broken whenever they feel like it.
