The gun-toting boys from Brazil who rule Rio’s ‘Corner of Fear’
Times Online (UK) ^

A boy steps boldly into the night traffic and waves a gun to bring the cars to a halt, clearing a path for a motorcycle which screeches into the intersection. Riding pillion is another boy, brandishing a machinegun.

Later two teenagers, also riding pillion on motorbikes, flash their guns at other motorists; nearby, a boy can be seen taking aim with a rifle equipped with a telescopic sight. Other youths wander the street smoking crack.

For residents, the junction between the busy Dom Helder Câmara and dos Democráticos, in North Rio de Janeiro, has become known as the Corner of Fear — and video footage of daily life there has shocked a nation already familiar with guns and violence.

The latest images, captured by undercover journalists from the Rio tabloid Extra, have exposed the city’s criminal youth culture in a manner that echoes the journalistic investigation featured in the film City of God.

It’s bad down there. The rich people all have gated compounds and body guards for a reason!

Man, how i’d love to be “invisible” and tote a paintball gun in the midst of these punks. “The Equalizer.”

Well, these ‘’kids’’ have signed their own death warrants but obviously don’t care. In Brazil, if you’re a criminal and you’re caught with a gun the police don’t waste time with charging you and a trial and all that. They shoot you on the spot. Saw a video of it once. Cops caught a suspected drug dealer who had a pistol on him. One cop took him behind a police van and shot him. Three times.

If ANY government on the right had built a wall to keep its mostly poor and minority citizens separated from the general population there would be non ending protests from the left. However, when the left builds said wall-not a peep.

Only if you haven’t bribed them enough.

You are so correct, sir. The shop owners in the area will soon pool together to hire state police contract killers to “off” these “little rascals”. In 1992 when I went there, the streets were full of homeless. They were systematically cleared out for the environmental summit there in 1994. When I returned, we saw only 2 homeless in the streets. The people we talked to said they were relocated to an area outside of the city and ID’d. If they returned, they were brought to the country side and shot. Rumors were there were large mass graves near the jungles outside of the city.

Yup, you’re right. I’ve worked with people from Brazil over the years and let me tell you, they have told me the cops there don’t fool around. The cops go out and deliberately kill the homeless street kids. And like I said, if you’re caught with a gun, you’re dead.

Thank you sir. I remember some years ago a Catholic bishop in Brazil tried to call world-wide attention to what the Brazilian cops were doing but I don’t think it went very far.

View the film, “Cidade de Deus”. A great movie. Shows the lives of boys growing up in the favela of Rio.
English sub titles only. Do yourself a favor and view it.

Also shows what happens when a communist, like Zero, runs a country.

By the way, Brazil is oil independent. No solar, no windmills, it can be done.

One of my friends used to live in Jardin Botanico on the West side of Rio. She used to explain "Those people weren't human anymore, they had become animals" and supported having them killed. In '94, people were well aware of what was happening, but talked about it in very quite tones.

When I went back later, to Sao Paulo, it wasn't quite as bad in the beach areas of Santos and Praia Grande. Less violent, but getting there.

I can’t understand why the church in Brazil is silent about this awful state of affairs. As I said I believe some clergy tried to speak out against this but apparently they were muzzled pretty fast. What a horrible thing.
