McCain wants feds to regulate vitamins and supplements
Small Government Times ^ | February 25, 2010 | Steve Adcock

SOUTHERN ARIZONA – So-called small government “Maverick” and Arizona Senator John McCain wants to give the federal government more power over the regulation of vitamins and supplements by repealing the classification of these products, currently, as “food”.

The Dietary Supplement and Safety Act would increase regulation over the availability of many vitamins and supplements available to consumers in the “free market”.

“It is big government that has a proven track record of not protecting the public. And it is big government that is seeking to take away yet another individual freedom, the right to choose one’s own treatment,” said JBS.org, a group dedicated to protecting freedom and the free market.

“An onerous burden would be placed on the shoulders of suppliers and retailers of dietary supplements, as they would have to “obtain written evidence” from the seller that the product is registered as required by law, and keep that documentation on file. Monetary penalties for non-compliance “may, in addition to other penalties imposed in this section, be fined not more than twice the gross profits or other proceeds derived from the manufacture, packaging, holding, distribution, labeling, or license of such dietary supplement,” they added.

“The McCain bill would change existing mandatory serious adverse reporting regulations, requiring minor adverse effects to be reported as well so that the FDA could arbitrarily pull supplements off the shelves or reclassify them as drugs. This immediate recall authority would be granted to the “Secretary upon determination,” that there is a “reasonable probability” that the product is “adulterated” or “misbranded.””

Relying on the FDA to regulate and control more of our free market, fraught with all kinds of safety concerns themselves, is an outrageous infringement on the freedom of consumer choice

Did anyone see the conversation between Suzanne Sommers and Bill O’Reilly last week. Check out the video if for no other reason the hot skirt Suzanne was wearing.

A man really needs to learn how to set his priorities. Juan must think this is important for some reason right now. Maybe regulating vitamins will help create or save 400,000 new jobs. LOL!

So, tonight I hear that places like Colorado have more franchises for "medical marijuana" joints than they do for Starbucks, and McCain wants to criminalize vitamins.

McCain't...time to take your Geritol, and go out to pasture.

Adcock could have stopped there - he said it all.

Juan McVain is a RINO's RINO and, hopefully, will finally face retirement by J.D. Hayworth.

I take a whey protein supplement to promote muscle growth and increase strength. (yes, they do work) I don't want some government flunky deciding what's good for me and what isn't. Even industry experts don't always agree, and a lot of it depends on the individual, where they're at, how hard they're training, what they're goals are, what works (or doesn't) for their body, what else is in their diet, etc. etc.

We absolutely do not want, do not need, and cannot afford the government stepping into our lives, regulating more of our lives, and taking away more of our liberties.

This phony conservative wouldn’t know true freedom if it hit him in the face.

I hope he loses to J.D. Hayworth!!!

Let’s be rid of him, once and for all.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

You can take an entire bottle of any vitamin supplement with little to no ill effects. I’d like to see McCain try that with any over-the-counter medication of any kind, such as aspirin.

I just want to know one thing? Is anyone at all surprised by this? McCain has always been an apologist for the all-encompassing state.

What pisses me off about supplements is the crap that some manufacturers will pass off with no penalty for it. Take protein powders. Some will claim that they give you 24 grams per serving. A place I used to go to would send product out to a 3rd party lab. If you came within 90% of the claimed levels he would carry the brand. If the brand failed then he would tell you that you could still buy it from GNC.

He may really be crazy. He ran for the job of president based on the fact that he had been in Washington for a long time and knew how things worked. The media loves and promotes him when he is bashing repubs. They got him on the ticket, then proceeded to trash him and promote the dimrat candidate. Frikikin moron, you got used and abused and now you want to continue to be a US senator? What kind of idiots to you take your constituants to be?

It's for the individual to do his own research, and make his own decisions accordingly. Or else your being pissed off about supplements is going to have an impact on *MY* access to the supplements *I* take. In addition, if the Feds get their hands on vitamins, the prices will rise, and big pharma will enter the picture.

No, thanks.
