LAS VEGAS (AP) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he hopes to pass a bill by next week to create a federal agency to promote tourism to the United States.

Reid says Republican Sens. John Ensign of Nevada, Johnny Isakson of Georgia and George LeMieux of Florida have agreed to support the bill, but he acknowledged he needs more GOP support for the Travel Promotion Act.

This new bureaucracy is being pushed out of our sight. I heard about it on a Nevada radio station.

Another snip about this from the Christian Science Monitor. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2010/0223/With-jobs-bill-Democrats-new-strategy-piecemeal-legislation

"Democrats plan to continue the strategy with a tourism promotion bill, The tourism bill, especially helpful to states such as Nevada, which has been hard hit by a drop-off in visitors, proposes creating a nonprofit corporation to promote travel to the United States and correct “misperceptions about US entry policy” since the 9/11 attacks. It would be financed by an annual assessment of $20 million from the tourism industry and $100 million a year from taxpayers. "

Let's dissect this, shall we?

"The tourism bill, especially helpful to states such as Nevada, .......

Harry is behind in the polls for his re-election...just buying some votes!

" proposes creating a nonprofit corporation to promote travel to the United States....

? Nonprofit? Since when has any government bureaucracy been for profit?? Will this be another cabinet level department? Yet another Czar? 'non-profits' will likely be in charge of handling this department....can you say ACORN???

"to promote travel to the United States and correct “misperceptions about US entry policy” since the 9/11 attacks. "

In other words, let 'em all in! 40% of foreign aliens become visa overstay illegal aliens. Foreign women, even the well to do, come here to drop their anchor babies and then take them home to grow up as "US voting citizens", where they don't even have to be here to vote in our elections..... Or they stay here and get the benefits of any US Citizen. This directly effects countries who sponsor terrorism.

"It would be financed by an annual assessment of $20 million from the tourism industry and $100 million a year from taxpayers. "

Tourism industry....that would be Harry's big donors at the Vegas casino's. He must keep those big donors happy! $20 million to them is a great investment to get the rich Saudi's, etc. in their casinos who can't get here now because they sponsor terrorism. And the employees? Can you say SEIU???

"and $100 million a year from taxpayers. " That one speaks for itself!

By the way, John McCain gets most of his money from the big casino boys in Vegas. Let's see if he's one of the republicans who help Harry out with this dangerous legislation.

Good grief! Can we please think of other stupid ways to waste money when we are already drowning in an ocean of debt? We need to cut all nonessential departments now, not create new ones. AFAIK the only essential department is defense. Most of the rest could be abolished with huge savings and little in the way of detriment to the American citizen.

NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! We need fewer Federal agencies, not more!

Big government junkies like Reid can never get enough. They believe that the solution to any problem is to create a Federal agency. There are plenty of good tourist attractions in the U.S. that have no problem attracting people. Instead of spending taxpayer money to help a few of his constituents, Reid should do the public a favor and cut the deficit and lower taxes.

The test should be if this bill conforms to "To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes; ".

Its a stretch, even in good times without trillion dollar deficits. To-regulate does not equate with to-promote.

“Good grief! Can we please think of other stupid ways to waste money when we are already drowning in an ocean of debt?”

Harry is real good at spending other people’s money, isn’t he??

But remember, this is from the guy who says the income tax is ‘voluntary’.

No.

The tourism industry is perfectly capable of creating a marketing campaign to promote its business. without government involvement.

Why should money be taken away from another industry (lets use the furniture manufacturing industry in the USA) to help promote the tourism industry? Don’t you think the furniture would like to market their products in foriegn countries too? But no, the government is going to take money away from the furniture industry (as taxes) so it can give the money to the tourism industry.

This whole approach is 100% backwards. What would work? Lower business taxes on ALL industries. That would give them the money they needed to do extra promotion of their industry (or anything else they needed.)

Isackson is my Sen. I’m going to call his office and give him hell for this.

We should be cutting federal programs and agencies.

Let the free market work and get Obama to keep his mouth shut.

Nancy claims there are 190 bills that have passed the House waiting on Senate action. Wonder if this is one of them?

I hope not, I’d like to see Nancy eviscerate Harry in public.

Clearly, an attempt by Harry to appease the Las Vegas lobby and get re-elected.
