These atrocities were occurring in predominately Catholic areas, Germany, Poland, Italy, France, etc. He was their leader whose idea is to uphold the beliefs of his Church and followers.
Yes, martyring himself would have been an option to focus attention to a problem he knew was occurring. I know the arguments that open opposition to the Nazi program would have endangered priests and nuns throughout the area, but you have to ask yourself what would St Peter or St Paul have done? It would not have been an unprecedented action.
Imagine the world wide outrage if anything had happened to the Pope.

I can name any number of tragedies occurring in the world today, if you want to attain a higher spiritual level and martyr yourself for one, be my guest.

You’re kidding aren’t you, that the pope should have friggin martyred himself over this?

Once again, there was this little dust up going on called WWII, and the pope was saving hundreds of thousands of Jews and others.

But you’re right, we should be reading taht teh Pope was a great guy who got himself killed over sectarian violence in Croatia

Beautiful world perspective.
